my son is three years old with a recent bout of gastroenteritis and a hospital admission for dehydration. Now drinking fairly well but not eating how long can I expect this to go on and are the symptoms normal. My daughter had viral hepatitis of unknown origin when she was 4 now six and obviously still always at back of my mind. But daughter has diarhhoea and vomiting this morning as well which is reassuring in a way that my son,s is nothing more than the hospital said it was but obviously not good that she now is ill.

Your sons age is a very important missing piece of information. If he is quite young, lethargic and not drinking properly he will get into trouble quite quickly. Ring NHS24/NHSDirect for advice.

My kids have had this sort of thing so many times, at the moment my son is on sofa with same thing, my advice to you is, if he is not drinking, and showing signs of dehydration, ie, wrinkled tummy, dry mouth, sunken eyes, then get to doc asap, dont worry too much if he still isnt eating, he will let you know when he is ready, kids can go a long long time without food, its the fluids you have to watch for, my daughter had this last week b4 my son did and she didnt eat for 6 days, cant stop her stuffing her face now! If he isnt drinking, give him a syringe full of water every 5 mins or so, for a few hours this will soon help with the dehydration.

I am sure your little boy will be fine - it will take him a while to get over his recent illness and for his tummy to settle again. However, if you are concerned straight to A&E - doctors don't do call outs anymore and NHS direct are useless. You pay your taxes . Unfortunately, the old days of when your own Doctor would come out to see you are over.

He needs to be taken back to the hospital and admitted thru the ER. Also, call his pediatrician's after hours service to tell them what's going on.

Call the attending physician. Yes, it's 445 am, but he has an answering service. Call now.
