i lost one of my 2 cats 3 wks ago to cancer, and i still have her brother. I don't think he noticed too much at first that she's gone apart from at meal times as i had my friends cat as well while they were out of the country. But they took her home on thursday (3 days ago) and so now he's alone in the house (all my cats have been indoor kitties for obvious reasons) while i'm at work and when i've got home for the last 2 nights i can hear him crying/calling as i'm putting the key in the door and it's really worrying me. -- I didn't want to get any more 'cos it's too upsetting to lose them but i don't know what to do for Jess, he's 12yrs old and has never been a lone cat. should i wait a while and see if he adapts or just get another kitty to keep him company? and would they get along??

try giving him a little bit of time.. they say sometimes cats can mourn the same way a human would. But another cat doesnt sound like such a bad idea when you're both ready. If you're worried about them getting along, try getting a kitten, especially one of the opposite sex. If you do get another cat though, don't forget to still give Jess lots of attention.

Kat: I am very sorry for your loss. I too have lost cats to cancer and it is very heart wrenching. Though I have multiple cats, they do seem to know when one is gone and why they are gone.

Your Jess is not a youngster...he is a senior citizen. It is a known fact that ANY "senior citizen" does better with someone to either care for or to keep them company. Humans and cats alike share this trait.

I strongly encourage you to get a kitten or at least a very young cat. Your Jess is most likely experiencing some depression because of the lonliness. Cats can die from grief and lonliness after a longtime fellow cat has gone. You need to supplement that loss since you are gone all day.

Yes I know all too well about how hard the loss is. I have been there many times. I wish I could tell you it gets easier, but it doesn't. In fact there have been times when I thought I wouldn't make it through the grief. However, I am a person that just can't live without the unconditional love a cat gives. And I also would never let one of my cats not have one of their "own" around.

You have to confront your concerns over another loss because your Jess's well being might depend on it.

Best wishes for you and Jess....:)

I think you should get another kitty to keep him company. It might be a little hard for them to get along at first cause that takes time but in the long run I think it would help keep Jess more satified. He seems like he is really lonely.Good Luck.

Also, yes it does hurt to lose them but think about the joy you have while they are here with you.

Bless, yes i agree try paying him some extra attention - maybe some treats 2, and contact the local cat homes to adopt another cat similar to his age ( do a search on cat shelters in your area). Hope every thing turns out for the best. Thinking of you.

You should go to your local cats protection league and see about adopting an older cat. I think a kitten would be too hyper for him as he is getting older but he would still like a bit of company for when you are out.

Good luck and I'm sorry for your loss

That's SO sad that I'm crying. Try not to be away from the house as much, and get him something to entertain his self. And/or get another kitty, POOR JESS!!! I hope he will be ok.

he's just lonely, and misses the other cat, you might try getting a older cat for him, he might not get over the other cat not being there, and he might, hard to say

If your not ready for another one, please DON'T get another, it won't be fair to it. talk to your vet, my landlady said that one of her cats had died and right after that one of her other cats started peeing on their bed even peeing on her and crying all the time. she took him in and there was no medical reason for it. so the started him on valum and that did wonders, no problems at all. she has since been able to cut the dose back and I'm not sure if he even gets it at all right now.
