You could use one inverter to make 120VAC. Then get a 120v/480V transformer to change that 120V into 480V.

No, dont do it. You are best off finding a ready made inverter. As has been said, if they are in the slightest bit out of phase you can wave goodbye to them and possibly yourself.

ONLY if they are mechanically driven inverters and they share a common shaft. Small out-of-phase difference could be catastrophic!
(To the skeptics.......... YES they do make MECHANICAL inverters. They are still used to drive control rod drive motors in some older Navy submarine nuclear reactors.........)

Its possible but you would need an electrical engineering degree and you'd have to be damn sure they werent outta phase.. other wise yer just gonna reinvent fire, and thats already been done to death....

Nope, not in series. Freq has to be in sync.
