Most religions are shams. There, now that's out of the way.
Let's think of the Bible like a textbook. It's been proven right more often than most textbooks in the U.S. have anyway. Let's also consider God to be the teacher. He tells us what we are supposed to believe and why and how. At the end of life, he will give us a test. We can answer any way we want to on that test. We can say there are twenty gods, or there is no god. We can say that we are saved by works alone or faith alone. We can say that only people who believe that pizza is its own food group get into heaven. We can say whatever we want and answer however we choose. That's the beauty of free choice.
But remember that God is the teacher. If your teacher tells you that 2 + 2 = 4, and you disagree, because you can site examples where 2 + 2 = 6, and you can convince all of your friends that 2 + 2 = 6, and you all agree that you will put that answer on the test, what do you think will happen. Is the teacher likely to give you credit for the question. I mean he stood up there in front of the class for days and repeatedly told you that in his class 2 + 2 = 4. You will get it wrong, no matter how strongly you believe that 2 + 2 = 6.
This is the problem with most people today. The Bible says a certain thing, and someone doesn't like it, so they go and say "but it really means this" and someone else says "no, it means ....." But there is only one answer, and it is what the Bible says, not what a man or a church says. The Bible is older, more comprehensive, more historically accurate, than most religions in the world today. God is no longer found in a temple.
Second reason, because he loves you.

If you don't believe in any god now, and you're okay with that, there's no real reason to start now.
I don't think relgions are a sham though. They've surved their purposes and civilization wouldn't have progressed without them. Most of the first buildings ever built besides homes were for religious purposes. Religion motivated people in a way that may not have been possible. Do you really think they would have built the pyramids if they honestly didn't believe an the afterlife? And can you think of anyone else would sacrifice their lives to bring literacy to New Guinea?
In a way, I'm jealous of deeply religious people. They have answers to all their questions. It doesn't matter if the answers are right or not. They believe they're right and no longer half to worry about it. It's a naive, childlike innocence we all, at one time or another, have wish we had.
If religion makes them happy, more power to them. But, if their religion starts causing other people to be unhappy then they need to tone it the fk down.

You shouldn't base your beliefs about God on organized religion, because you are right they are a sham. Just because religions are a sham, doesn't necessarily mean that God is. God is within. When you know yourself, then you will be known, and you will understand that you are a child of God.

I was semi-raised by my grandparents, whom I adore. Grandpa was a minister and most of my religious background came from him. He is a wonderful man and a fabulous preacher but as I became older, it became clear to me that I had never really "believed". I checked out other religions, dabbled in "spirituality" and settled on agnosticism for a good long time before finally admitting to the big A. My advice to you is to remove religion from God b/c with a few exceptions (my Gpa being one) a lot of religions are less than ideal. Meditate and listen to yourself. Pay attention to what is in you. Then ask yourself what you think. It won't take long to decide one way or another. Religion is beside the point. If you decide that you DO believe in God, than He will guide you to the proper church (or so I hear :) )

There is no other way to Heaven. This world didn't come about just by accident or happenstance. God authored it. Look at all the different and good things this world can offer. That's part of the Christians love for God. A person doesn't worship a certain religion,. A Christian believes in and worships God

Seek to feel good under all circumstances (that means not hating religions)
The law of attraction will bring you knowledge of all-that-is whether you call it "god" or not.
At one level, religion is a sham. At other levels, it is a symbol of deeper realities.

Belief in God is a good start but how will you know how to please Him if you do not follow His true religion.
Your starting point that religions are a sham is a good point to start your journey. If you look critically at religions and their scriptures and let your conscious guide you, you will find the true faith and that is a promise from God.
Happy journeying.

Religion is man made - having a relationship with God - now that is spiritual. You need to believe that Jesus died on the cross for your sins, repent and obtain salvation. Jesus is coming back soon and we need to be prepared - these are the last days. We are not human beings having a spiritual experience, rather we are spiritual beings having a human experience. Jesus loves you and wants you to give your life to Him. The choice is yours - Heaven or Hell. God Bless You!!

God is God. Religion is religion.
Religion is man reaching up to touch God. Jesus is God reaching down to touch man. Having a relationship with God is not an organized religion, it's a relationship.

George Carlin compared religion to inserts in shoes. If you need an insert to walk o.k. and get through your day, fine. But don't go nailing inserts onto other people's feet.
If something works for you, great - but, no matter how much you may want it to, it will not work for everybody. You should find what makes you happy and able to get through the day and not bow to what others think you should do
