Actually the opposite happened. People used to come up here and work for a season and return home because of the Bracero Program. Some bleeding heart came along and said it was inhumane so now Mexicans have to sneak into the US, bring their families, and are treated worse than ever by employers. People's attitude was about the same as it is now, which is why the 1986 Immigration Reform act was passed.

In the 1980's, immigration was a circular pattern. Workers came to the United States because of seasonal work and some chose to return home to their coutries of origin. Under IRCA, around 3 million immigrants were granted amnesty, nowhere near the numbers talked about today. (12-20 million). Also, since Operation Gatekeeer and 9/11, border enforcement has strengthened, preventing migrants to travel back and fotth.

The arguments weren't as severe because the problems weren't nearly as bad. That was 2.3 million, this, realistically, is about 20 million, and there is a huge difference of impacts on schools, health care and wages. Also, we hadn't yet seen how those legalized would become 'hubs' to illegally bring in more.

I believed Reagan when he said there would be enforcement. I don't believe the government now. Heck, they are even trying in BOTH bills to renege on the 700 mile fence they overwhelmingly voted for just prior to the election.

Credibility? I think not.

Politicians then, gave amnesty to eliminate the results of a problem, they did not want to fix. Amnesty made the problem for all those who believe in the rule of law, go away. Note no person involved with immigration were given amnesty, only illegal aliens. Politicians will have no will, to fix this problem again. you can ask this same question in 20 years.

they were not happy then also.but there was not such anger as now because the population seeking amnesty is more now and the number of crimes done by the illegal imigrants is at it hike.he did it because We needed workers to perform duties declined by the american citizens.and some political benefit too.

No, it was different. in those days mexicans crossed the border to work and returned home at night. Or came for a season and returned home. Since the Reagan changes, the bordere is closed (it used to be really open) so mexicans started brining their famalies and staying here. So there were no ever increasing numbers of illegal immagrants staying and living in the U.S,, they came to work and went home to their families.

I think he said it was a one time deal and they would pass laws, which were never enforced, to make it a crime to hire illegals.
