FYI - For Those of you that don't understand debate you really would do much better by skipping questions that enrage you. Rage is not good for the heart and it causes stress.

My goodness, you can feel the emotions pouring off of some of these answers.

There is not much difference between the two. In both situations, the government responsible believes that they are in the right, and acrting within the scope of their laws.

The Iranians do not follow the 12 mile international waters rules. I don't know the exact distance off the top of my head, but their laws extend the boundary farther out. They are acting the same way the US would act if a foreign military vessel entered what we see as US territorial waters. From the footage I've seen in the media, I'd say that the British troops are being treated much better than I expected. In the past we've seen the extremists do some pretty horrid things to prisoners. I'm not saying I agree with this, I'm just presenting what I believe is their viewpoint.

The detainees in Guantanamo are being labeled automatically as terrorists by a fair portion of the respondants. Some of the detainees were arrested/detained on suspicion or because they have the same name as a suspect. They were not all picked up overseas, or during combat. They are being held there until their status can be determined. The US government feels that this is necessary to safeguard the US from terrorist attack. I'm not saying that this is wrong either, though the Supreme Court (a politically appointed body) has spoken out against it. It may be that detaining just one of the people in Guantanamo has prevented a large-scale 9/11 type attack.

This is a pretty simple breakdown of the situation, but anything more would require some serious religious/political discussion.

Well I personally feel that the difference is this. The Iranian Government says the British Sailors were purposely found to be in Iranian waters, and has such-they were apprehended! The British Government will insist that, that is not so-and we have the GPS systems to prove such! Britain is not currently in any 'declared' hostile stance with the Iranian Government. But have expressed some disgust over Irans possible Uranium Enrichment Program! Which would ultimately give Iran the potential to produce Nuclear Armaments! And it seems that the current 'knucklehead' in Iran,is just using this to raise the ante up! Personally...I'm behind the British on this one! Now we'll discuss Guatanamo Bay. Guatanamo bay is a US military facility, that is currently being used to process Prisoners of War that were captured by US led Nato forces in Afghanistan in the early days following the attacks on Sept. 11th 2001. Many of the prisoners held there were armed, and found has such-when they were captured! Many are possibly 'key' Al Qaida figures and Insurgents who were involved in other random acts of terrorism as well! It will take some time for them to process the prisoners...because some may be innocent! And we don't interrogate in the same manner of cruelty-like some of the countries over there do! It takes a a lot longer to interrogate with the "nice approach" than the other method-which is 'Beat the living b'jesus out of them' until they confess to the crime! You can get anyone to admit to anything-if you smash them hard enough,or almost kill em? I'll bet that they are probably getting a better shake in Guatanamo, then their British counterparts in Iran!!! But,again-the prisoners in Guatanamo were found to be armed and hostile-and many have Al Qaida links...or know of some! The British sailors,on the other hand...were doing a routine patrol and offered no hostile resistance to their Iranian captors! They were doing nothing wrong,or purposely trying to spark a fight with Iran. And if they were trying to spark a fight, there would be alot of 'dead Iranians' right now! Because the British will certainly not put up with any guff-without causing a really good nosebleed! So I really think that you probably should not to draw any parallels between Guatanamo Bay and the 15 British captives...they are two entirely different matters! That is of course...my opinion!!! But I am glad to share it with you! Thx. theerrander

Total difference: the prisoners in Guantanamo are hidden of the world and its families don't know as they are or if, at least, they are alive.
The prisoners in guantanmo are eating food for pigs, the British were eating what they cannot eat in the country of them. The prisoners in Guantanamo are being humiliated, walk chained and nor know what they are making there.

Well, the difference is that the British arent at war with Iran and Guantanamo Bay is a detention center for terrorists fighting our soldiers.

The British sailors are not being tortured or sexually abused like the prisoners in Guantanamo Bay.

Guantanamo Bay houses terrorists captured in armed conflict, on the battlefield. They are legally detained.

The British forces were in Iraqi territorial waters, and the Iranians took them hostage, which is against the Geneva Convention, as well as international law.

A Federal Court recently said there is nothing wrong with the way Guantanamo Bay detainees are treated.(http://newstandardnews.net/content/ion/index.cfm/bulletin/6347 )

British soldiers are not terrorists. It is not the first time Iranians have gone into Iraqi waters.

2006:
AUSTRALIAN SHIP REPEL 6 IRANIAN GUNBOATS IN IRAQ.
March 9, 2006
"An Australian frigate was involved in a tense stand-off with six Iranian gunboats while guarding Iraq's oil platforms in the Gulf on Saturday.

The crew of HMAS Parramatta spotted the six motorboats from the Revolutionary Guard Navy approaching the disputed international boundary near Iraq's Khwar Abd Allah oil terminal. The offshore platform is one of two that Iraq relies on for 87 per cent of its income.

The Parramatta's captain, Commander Jonathan Mead, ordered his crew to sweep at high speed through the area.

"It was a tense 30 minutes but we were able to de-escalate it," Commander Mead said. The Iranians eventually turned away.

Two days earlier the Parramatta had intercepted another Iranian vessel that crossed the boundary."

The difference is Iran are conforming to the Geneva convention and Guantanamo violates all they stand for ironical that Iran is being made out to be barbarians when US military are locking people up for over 5yrs in solitary confinement without finding out if they are actually guilty of anything so much for innocent until proven guilty.

Those in Guantanamo have not been proven to be terrorists just suspected awaiting proof of guilt.

The British sailors were kidnapped and being used as propaganda. they are not guilty of anything just in the wrong place at the wrong time. my prayers are with them and their families

The prisoners in Gitmo are terrorists who tried to kill innocent people and would kill you if they had the chance The British sailors were guarding the coastal waters of Iraq when they were taken hostage by a county that is supposedly not at war with the British
