we work with some of the poorest of the poor living in this world... most of them live in huts or in thatched dwellings... once in two years they need approximately Euro 60 to change the thatch... but most of them struggle because they do not have that kind of cash! We also work with some tribal communities... there thatch has already collapsed a couple of years ago and for want of cash, they have not been able to replace... the world in which we live in is a cruel place for the poor and the marginalized... i think most people have no genuine interest to help... their only interest is indeeded their comfort!

I live in Anchorage, Alaska. There are anywhere between 3000-3500 hundred homeless people in the community. The majority of these are people with school aged children.

The way I help is by contacting the legislators and letting them know of my concerns. The mayor has a ten year plan for putting and end to homelessness. Well then years is a long time for a family of four to live in a car. I let them know that these people need relief now.

I attend a small church but we have a ministry that helps the homeless. We give out new socks and a gift card to a fast food restaurant to the homeless people. I know this seems small, but the people do seem to appreciate it.

Assisting homelessness is very hard because there are a range of complex issues associated with being homeless and its little to do with actual bricks and morter. As a person who has been active working with the issue of homelessness for years there are some fundalmental social issues that impact on homelessness - these are : mental health, domstic violnce, substance abuse, unemployment and discrimination. further to these complications are the fact that rents are on the increase and that there are more people renting and demand is high so land lords can be choosey. If you had a property who would you prefer to rent to 1) single working professional couple earning a hundred thousand a year or people on social security with 5 kids and perhaps other social issues - long term unemployment etc. You would want who ever presents with the most stable income to pay your morgage.

When trying to assist homeless people its important to not only address the lack of housing for the present - so some kind of roof is required either emmergency or short term housing but then you need to address other factors training and employment, legal issues like financial issues - which may mean they cant get their amentities connected, consolidating debts and getting the individual to budget their money. Health issues are another reason why people are homeless so looking at long term health issues like substance abuse, alcohol abuse etc. Education is another like parenting skills - its hard to house people with anti social children. And other education like people skills and problem solving. ASsisting the homeless requires a holistic approach I have seen services put a homeless person in a property but had to evich them six months later because thy had many illegal occupants in it and would not pay the rent or keep the propert clean.

In my community mostly its low income families that struggle to find secure and safe accommodtaion. there is also a lot of domestic violence here whoh impacts on housing.

I think there are 2000 in the Springfield, MO community. Some of the guys don't go to shelters, they camp out. About half of the homeless men are Veterans. Half of the homeless are families with children. There is a transitions program to get them back into a home and job. I gather info on people who have a lot of house items, furniture, linens, kitchen items, toys, and appliances. Then I give the info. to the program so these things can all get picked up. If there is a single mom and just one kid, I arrange to meet with them and get them to do something social with me and my daughter like library, bowling, circus or ballgames. We share our stories and come up with ways for this Mom to get her life together. If there is a need, I can go around to my friends, neighbors, and family to get their donations and help. Everything is needed: book of stamps, notebooks, coats, sweats, toys, games, shoes, haircuts, and a shoulder to cry on when the day is just too much for them. For the Veterans, it is the job of our country to provide care for them: housing, medical care, mental health services, and vocational if they are able to contribute. If the US would do what it is mandated to do for these men, we could solve half of the homeless problem in our country.

I don't think there are any here, but that would be because I'm in a tiny community of about 300 people.

At the last survey, 385, but we're in a smallish town. I want to buy a farm so they can have a forever place if need be, rather than a series of shelters.
