I'm a new immigrant and does not have any account yet. I live in St.Louis, Missouri. Which bank and what account to start do you suggest? What about secured credit card?

Welcome to the U.S.

If you have already opened up an account with a bank or credit union, you might check with them about a secured card. I would suggest trying with them first before trying elsewhere since you have already established a relationship with them.

If you haven't opened an account with a bank or credit union yet, I would suggest doing that as soon as you can, and you might ask about their secured cards at that time.

I doubt that you would receive an unsecured card or store card yet, at least until you build up some credit history here.

Go to Best Buy or Circuit City and buy something you want and that you can easily afford. Ask for credit. They pop out those credit cards pretty quick. I just bought a car on credit to get started. Or buy a bit of furniture from one of "those" furniture stores. Don't over buy and pay on time. Be sure to open a savings account and a checking account and be sure to figure out how to handle it. Never bounce any checks and keep the register accurately. Many banks offer the free accounts so that you don't have to pay monthly fees. The proper use of these accounts show that you are responsible with money. These should get you started. Be careful with those cards. . .I used to live in St. Louis. It's a great place. Enjoy!

Your best bet is to get a secured credit card (this is a card where your deposit equals your credit line). Make sure to ask or find out if the credit card comapny reports to all major credit bureaus. In order to get one though you will need to get a social security number if you have not already done. After, a few monthly payments you will have established a credit score and be on your way to building good credit.

Also, if you make all of your monthly payments on-time, the bank will refund your deposit after one year.

Stop spending like you got it to spend. Budget. Checking account. Small credit card. Debit card is nice. If you are having trouble paying your bills...and I dont mean utilities or rent. Call your creditors. Talk to the credit manager and try to get your intrest percentage down. Maybe stop your credit use untill you can catch up. Ask to lower your payments and you will stop using credit untill you get caught up. Do not use those guys that are non profit and can get you debt free. They cant do any thing that you cant do.These people are not lawyers. You can do actually more than they can do if you really want to get help. No one can get BAD marks of your credit report if they are LEGAL reports. No one....but you. Make a deal........as we say. Listen.....if you want more info....email me.

A secured credit card is one way, if your bank offers it. Welcome to the US! Pay all of your utility bills on time and be patient. Start off trying to get a store card. Don't get into debt!
