Paula Deen's Pinto Beans:

5¼ hours 10 min prep
10 servings

1 lb dry pinto beans
1 teaspoon chili powder
1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
1/2 lb ham hocks
4 cups water
1 onion, leave whole
salt, to taste
pepper
garlic powder

1. Wash beans and soak overnight in cold water.
2. Drain the beans and dump into a slow cooker.
3. Stir in chili powder and oregano. If using ham hock: Pre-soak ham in a seperate pot, for a least 2 hours, or refrigerate up to 24 hours. Cook ham hock on top of oven for about 30 minutes, save the liquid and add to your beans.
4. Add the ham hock beans and more liquid to cover beans.
5. Add the onion (whole) to your beans then season with salt, pepper and garlic salt.
6. Cook on high for at least 5 hours or until beans are tender.
7. Serve up beans with some of the ham hock in them and cornbread.

The very first recipe youve recieved is how my mom cooked them, its good that way. How I like them is cook the beans in water until they are done. Get a frying pan real hot add about 1/2 cup of oil. And spoon the beans in, (NOT THE LIQUID) then stir them around getting them kinda crispy. Then smash them with a potato masher, add some salt and a little juice cuz they tend to get too thick. you can add jalapenos, if you want, stuff a tortillia with them and some cheese for a burrito, or grab some chips and eat them that way. I like them best that way anyway. Hope this works out for you..

That all sounds good but don't forget to add the cilantro , and the cumin and maybe a few packs of Caldo De Pollo Achiote that always zest it up a little . Oh yea don't forget to soak them over night this way they take less time too cook and you can add a pinch of baking soda when you first start to cook them this brings out the gas and then you don't have to you know !!after you eat them lol!! Oh and a can of tomato sauce ... Muy Bien Gracias !! :)

My in-laws did it this way, to me it is the all time best. Pinto beans, A slice of salt pork, on the rind but sliced down to the rind. So the pieces are attatched at bottom, lose at top. Cook until ALL beans are soft. you will have to add water occ. I like them in my tacos when done.
