Post partum means a period aftr delivery, of course it is real. What you mean an excuse? Women needs to regain strength and energy on such period. Her reproductive system needs some repair and go back to its previous condition as in pre pregnant state.

Postpartum depression is a very real phenomenon. Not every woman gets it, and most who have it are not diagnosed properly.
A woman's body undergoes many changes during pregnancy - every system is affected. The hormones estrogen and progesterone build up during the 9 months of pregnancy, and then come crashing down in the 24 hours after delivery. Think of it as gargantuan PMS. Combine that with the sleeplessness of new motherhood, and the physical and emotional demands of caring for a new baby, and you have some serious stress.
I knew a woman who was an OB resident, had a baby, and six weeks after delivering, she threw herself off an 8 story parking garage and died.
It's real, all right.

Yes, of course it is real. And I'm not just saying that because I'm a woman. After delivering a baby, a woman's body goes through all kinds of changes as it tries to return the woman's body back to pre-pregnancy stage (please note that: before, during and after pregnancy, women's bodies have massive hormonal changes), physically and mentally. The sudden changes in hormonal levels such as progesteron, oestrogen and lutein hormones result in moodiness and sometimes even post-partum depression. There are lots of information available on the Internet. Or, if you want more detailed explanations, try reading pre-university level biology books. : )
