My dad has diabetes and smokes. Any suggestions on how to ake him stop? If tried to help him, but nothing works. I've hid his ciggs and lighters, but that just makes him angery. he said he tried the patch, but it wasn't for him. I've even had a dream that he died on my birthday, how sad is that? Please Help (and please be serious, I don't need jokes or bad comments right now, I'm sad enough as it is))

they have this perscription out that looks like a small old fashioned cigarette with a plastic filter. you just puff on it instead of a smoke that way you can still get your nicotine but not all the tar and other junk from cigs. and you ween yourself off of them maybe you could suggest that. i have the same issue with my mom. she smokes and has asthma and will not quit.. parents are just down right stubborn.....

Write a letter to Dr. Phil and explain to him in details what's going on with your dad. Share with him the dream you had and how desperate your are in having your dad to quit smoking. Meanwhile talk your doctor on how you can help your dad from stop smoking.

There's one more factor in mind. He may not want to quit! If you decide not to bring in Dr. Phil, try to get a counselor to come in and talk to your dad. The problem may derives from mental assistance. If a person really wants to quit smoking, they would make every effort to do, but the person don't understand that he lives for other people as well. Like your dad, he must understand his life to his family is just important as well. I hope you contact Dr. Phil. I will pray for him. You're a good daughter.

God Bless

You can hide his ciggs all you want, but he is a grown up and already aware that you want him to stop.

The next step is to take care of yourself. It is very important that you understand you can't change another person, you don't have control over him. You can only change what is happening to you.

Make sure you eat healthy, exercise and enjoy your life. Invite your dad to review recipes with you. Let him know that you'd like to help prepare food that is healthy for him, too, as he has to watch what he eats as a diabetic.

Maybe if he sees that you are taking care of yourself and interested, he will start to get a clue but I can't guarantee it.

If he does start to show interest in stopping, there are many different programs out there and his doctor can help.

My mom was diabetic and had high blood pressure, and she did nothing to take care of herself. No matter what i said she just didn't think anything would ever happen to her. Well she ended up having a stroke that left her unable to walk or speak clearly, and she can't feed herself. She now lives in a nursing home. What i'm trying to say is you can't make someone do something, they have to want to do it. Believe me my mom wishes she took better care of herself, but know it's to little to later.

This might work,or it might gt ya a 'Butt whippin". Walk outside where your Dad is and pullout a cigarette. or a cigar Say to him"Dad since I can't convince ya to stop then I am going to join Ya" I'm going to start smokin" and then "Light it up"He will get MAD.Angry,whatever. You should include your Mom in this too. Now listen to him harp on all the reasons ya shouldn't smoke. Abd then say "Dad ,thats what I have been trying to tell ya all along. Watch his reaction

Tell him what you just said - that you won't be able to live a good life without him. That's all he needs to hear. Trying to convince him or hiding his cigs just makes him feel forced and/or out of control. He needs to know you NEED him and want him around.

Your dad truly does NOT want to quit. I quit 4 years ago, for health reasons as well, and I literally hate myself, and the 40 lbs that I've put on. I'm more uncomfortable now WITHOUT cigarettes, then I've ever been WITH cigarettes. Leave him be. You wont like him if he does quit. Because he'll be miserable and wont like himself.
