Do well on the ASVAB. When you sit down with a service liaison to pick your job, keep asking what else he has, unless he directly offers you the job you want. Tell him what you want and see what he says. Some jobs aren't always available, but tell him it's either that or nothing. Of course there are never any guarantees. I see plenty of kids come through the MEPS I work at who want to be SEALS etc. These are really hard schools, so even if you get what you want at the MEPS have a backup plan. And, as always, get everything in writing. Out of curiosity, what branch and job do you want?

First of all, you're going to be pressured like hell to join whatever branch you're looking into when you go to MEPS!!! I was under the impression I was just taking a physical to make sure I qualified not knowing that it's a whole lot more than that. They want you to JOIN! that day!!! The pressure comes out! Get anything said in writing! Whether that be a college bonus of 50K or an engineer job of some sort! In Writing is key!! When you go to MEPS, don't feel like you're obligated to ****! I didn't know that and ended up joining when I was just going for a physical and next thing I know, I committed 5 years of my life to active duty Marine Corps!! Happened pretty fast for me because I didn't know the pressure was that great when I went to MEPS and I was supposed to leave within 3 weeks at that!! Anyway, don't underestimate MEPS and what it's all about and have a plan, get your "job" in writing otherwise you may be cleaning dish's as a cook or doing some undesirable job especially one you can't use outside of the military which is the worst. Good Luck....

Going to MEPS and wondering what it will be like?

You will first be given several medical exams
-eye sight
-hearing
-physical condition (spine alignment, full joint movement, normal flexibility)

You will than be given the ASVAB, the military aptitude test, the score you get on this will let them know what jobs your are qualified for (and disqualified for)

From this, you will go to a computer terminal where a recruiting officer will pull up all the jobs they are hiring for, you can only get the jobs that appear on the screen, if the job you want is not there, simply tell them that you do not wish to sign up today.

(The bonus is directly related to the job, higher bonuses for jobs they need to fill right away, lower bonuses for jobs that don't matter as much/ not as big a need to be filled)

You can always go back next month to see if there is a job opening in the position you want.

The other answers cover most of it pretty well, but remember 1 VERY IMPORTANT thing, if you sign up for the job you want, but fail the qualification training, you will be reassigned to another MOS (job) according to the needs of the military. In other words, if you can't hack it in the job you ask for, you are NOT released from the military, you must still serve your time, but in whatever job the military needs to fill. The fine print on the contract will also state that you can be required to change jobs, if the military deems it necessary. Getting it in writing is all fine and good, but the contract can be changed after you sign it, and you have no legal basis to file for breach of contract.

You can only secure one of the two for yourself. Bonus is dependent on your MOS. They can't give you something the military doesn't offer. To get a specific job, tell them you want that job. Don't sign anything unless your contract has that job in it.

You will get what you sign. Don't listen to what they tell you, READ the contract... don't sign it unless it's what you want. If it's not in the contract, it's not real.

Also, if you have a recruiter who is looking out for you, as my son did, make sure you don't go to MEPS without him.

If they don't offer you what you want, get up and leave. They'll mess with you unless they know your serious about getting what you want.

You can't. It's all based on your ASVAB score and what's available the day you go.
