It's a quick easy way to stereotype and profile a person so you can hate him without any further intellectual considerations. Kind of like the N word.

To me, a Fundie is someone who values Authority and Conformity above all else. They are same kind of mind-set that motivated the genocide of the Native Americans, hates homosexuals, and feels threatened by any kind of individualistic behavior. They reason that if people can do what they want without Authority's permission or the acceptance of the group, then society would crumble because everyone would do their own thing. They think their view is all that keeps society together and prevents utter chaos. This is why they look down on individuals, outsiders, and those born with different sexual orientations. Those kind of people represent a threat to Authority and are seen as enemies of (their) Society. If they just accepted that gays are born that way, they would accept them into Society. But, since they view it as a choice, it makes gays the worst kind of rebels to them. Choosing to go against the Norm is the worst sin to a Fundie.

fundie applies to any religion, not just Christianity. It means someone who takes their holy book to be word for word true.

Someone who refuses to learn, refuses to think, and refuses to consider the possibility that they could possibly ever be wrong. Generally, they find one book follow it as if it were the holy word, frequently denouncing anything that disagrees with it as obviously false. They rarely get past the defense of "Because God says so." Sometimes they don't even get that far, responding to any and all criticism with something like, "You're just trying to persecute me!"

Extremist Christians that take the bible at its word, and do everything they can to harass people into joining their religon. Many of them even insult people directly who disagree.
Edit: No, it would be better if they kept their religion to themselves.
