This question has been answered thousands of times. We all know that once a contract has been entered, there are penalties for breaking it.
My brother is now serving his third tour in the Iraq war. He is a Marine Reserve Gunny Sergeant. He has killed no women or children.
He could have been home safe and sound in the states long ago, but volunteered to go back. Everyone is fully aware of the contract they sign when they join a branch of the US armed forces.
You are a sadly misinformed person, why not stop the assault on the decent, hard working, self-sacrificing men and women who are proud to serve.
The contract with the government gives you no option to be a coward, whatever the rationalization.

Yes, those volunteering know what they are volunteering for.
The purpose of the soldiers in Iraq is to police and maintain order and hunt terrorists. True, sometimes women and children receive the ugly end of war. That has been true over the centuries. Thank goodness most nations fight by an agreed conduct known as the Geneva Convention that set "polite" rules of war.

You are right, it is a volunteer service. But that doesn't mean that every day the Sgt comes out and says "alright, who wants to volunteer to go into battle today?" No, he says "We're going into battle today." There are repercussions because you volunteered to follow orders without question. And please, stop the propaganda about women and children. If they are combatants, then they are just as likely to die as anyone else. If you threaten me, I don't care who you are, I'll defend myself. And no, they are not just shooting people in the streets at random, like you wish they would so you could say that they are more horrible than you...get a life and do something good with it.

It's a volunteer force because there is no draft. Folks who have joined the military have done so on their own free will.
Just because it's a volunteer force doesn't mean that members can do whatever they want...
It's a volunteer force because members volunteered to be a part of that force and accept all that it entails - even if that means going to fight in a war.
If you are a consciencious objector you shouldn't join the military.

Enlistment is voluntary. But once you sign a contract its your life.
If you choose to buy a car that is your choice. If you refuse to make payments on that car, you get in big trouble right??
As for the killing women and children, you have no idea what you are talking about. My husband has saved more women and children in the last 4 yrs in Iraq, than you will ever know in your lifetime. Get your facts straight then maybe your mother won't be so ashamed.

At first I thought "good point", but then I realized, it's not voluntary every morning they wake up. It is voluntary to sign up, after that, you're pretty much in. Give me a break with this women and children stuff- if women are equal like they say, then drop that from the equation- you can't have it both ways. Also, there aren't that many kids getting killed, and it certainly isnt intentional. How about when Sadaam Insane was in power?

No. By definition, throwing people in jail for refusing to join the military makes it a draft, not a volunteer service.
However, once someone joins, they don't get to pick and choose which orders they want to follow. So, if they join the military, and are ordered to Iraq, they must follow those orders and can be punished for refusing to obey the orders.
That has nothing to do with it being voluntary entry.

Yes.
They voluntarily joined the military knowing that they could possibly be sent to war and understanding that war often entails killing people.
Just because they rethink it after the fact doesn't mean they didn't volunteer in the beginning nor does it free them of their current obligations.

1. It is obvious you've never served.
2. Our young men and women are not killing innocent women and children. The insurgents - supported by Iran, Syria, and Al Qaeda - are doing that. Saddam did that. Our brave young men and women have brought the right to vote to millions of Iraqis who never had that right before. And they voted that we stay there and finish the job.

Pretty ignorant question....we volunteer to serve...if every time we had a disagreement with the commander and chief...duty would not mean a whole lot...something you obviously know nothing of...Oh and I never killed women and children...I love the Iraqis they are nice people for the most part....
