Time zones are needed to divide today from yesterday. If we had no time zones we would have no international date line.

Your time zone is supposed to be arranged so that at 12:00 noon the sun has reached the highest point it will get to that day. It will not be overhead at noon for most of the world - the farther from the equator the lower in the sky the sun will reach.

If you didn't have time zones, then at noon , for example, it would be the middle of the day in some places, and the middle of the night in other places. The time zones are determined by the midday sun in a determined spot in each zone.

Because if the time were the same the world over then it would be high noon at around sunset here, thou in china it would be middle of the night, as just an example, time zones are to adjust for the earth's rotation in relationship to the sun, so that at high noon it really is high noon.

Railroads. Travel over great distance in a short time lead to a need for time zones. Before, towns kept time. I would imagine farmers had a lot to do with the practice of rising with the sun.

Sir Sandford Fleming (A Canadian) developed timezones as a way of standardizing time... prior to timezones... every location would set it's time by when the sun was at its highest point - noon. the problem was when the railway began, there was a 12 minute difference between Montreal and Toronto, it became a challenge and very inefficient to calculate time. so areas were established to 'standardize time'
