Fork on the left, knife and spoon on the right.

The reason the fork is on the left and the knife is on the right is because about 5 out of 6 people are right handed, so when you cut meat you use your left hand with the fork to anchor the meat and the right hand to cut the meat. The spoon is on the right because soup doesn't need to be cut.

If you are having multiple courses, the first courses go outside (like salad fork would be more left than the main course fork). Desert fork goes in the middle.

Use the fork on the outside to eat your salad. Next course, use the next fork, etc. Same goes for knives,

Fork on the left of the plate, knife on the right.

Both forks and knives should be used at a sit down dinner and the knife should be used to cut meat, then placed at the top of your plate.
