Yes. Not only has it been this way today, but they have been so full of themselves for most of human history.

Well, you are partially correct. Remember Christians are human, too. Some act self-righteous and sanctimonious. Don't judge us all to be that way.
A Christian's first priority is to gain entrance into God's eternal Kingdom.
Second priority is to take as many with him as he can, while saying and doing nothing that might likely turn others away from God. It takes practice to behave in such a manner. For a while, you'd probably thought me to be self-righteous, sanctimonious buffoon, maybe even at times now, but I don't think I am, and as I grow, I think I will be that way less often. I hope I appear to all as a kind caring person that hopes to say the right thing at the right time.
Remember...Love thy neighbor!!! 0:-)

I'm a Christian who doesn't believe in Religion of any kind.It doesn't say anywhere in the bible that we have to worship Religion to get to Heaven.I believe that all sin is the same, that there isn't any sin that's better or worse than another. When the Jews brought the woman to Jesus and told him she was caught red handed committing adultery and the penalty for that was death by stoning.Jesus said,"Ye who is without sin may cast the first stone".He didn't say Ye who is without worse sin than her's may cast the first Stone.Because sin is sin period so we shouldn't feel holier than thou and be in constant judgment of others because we think our sins aren't as bad as theirs that we're better than someone else. And in my opinion that is exactly the attitude that religion teaches it's followers. When I see someone lost in sin I don't feel as if I'm any better than they are instead I wish Satan would leave them alone so they can be released from his control and no longer be his slave.I don't feel like saying"You will burn in Hell for what you are doing" instead I feel like saying "Please forgive them Father, they don't know what it is that they do"When a person is truely saved all of their sins are forgiven and they are released from Satan's control as their old self dies on the cross with Jesus and their resurrected as a brand new being in the body of Christ.Christ our Lord places his laws on our minds and in our hearts as we are fully forgiven and unconditionally loved.Since we are no longer judged and never treated with arrogance by our Heavenly Father what gives us the right to do it to others? This doesn't include the laws of society which are put in place to govern society. We need to judge criminals and remove them from innocent people. But rather people who simply don't know any better and do sinful things are the ones we should just pray for and never judge. We are to love one another which is Gods commandment.

Pride can be a very serious sin. Christians are people who know they are sinners.
The Catholic Church teaches that there are only two sins that can dam you -presumption and despair. We do not have the right to presume on God's mercy and we do not have the right to despair of God's mercy.

Your statement is true of some religious people and maybe many.
To the people that actually do follow the Bible and try their best to live their life in accord with God's Word, they are humble. Jesus was humble and 1 Peter 2:21 says: "....Christ suffered for you, leaving you a model for YOU to follow his steps closely. Since God's Son was humble, we know that God wants us to be humble too.
Many people can have knowledge and that tends to make them proud but a person who loves God and follows the footsteps of his Son Jesus, their knowledge should not make them puffed up with pride, instead it moves them to show love to others. The apostle Paul said at 1 Corinthians 8:1-3: "Knowledge puffs up, but love builds up. If anyone thinks he has acquired knowledge of something, he does not yet know it just as he ought to know it. But if anyone loves God, this one is known by him."
Jesus had great knowledge, but he was never overbearing. His goal was to reach hearts with Bible truth. So that should be the goal of those who know the Bible, if they have love. The apostle Peter counseled the early Chrisitans to be ready to make a defense for the truth but they should do so "together with a mild temper and deep respect." When a person is humble and mild and teaches in a respectful way then they will more likely be able to draw people to them.
No one should boast about what they know. Everything each and every one of us know we have learned from someone else.

I know many very religious people who keep it to themselves. They don't preach to others; they're not judgemental. It's their personal thing.
On the other hand, I also know some real "religious" jerks who are so holier than thou.
So, some are arrogant, some are not. Being religious doesn't make you a good or bad person.
