I think the present monogamous social system is against nature. All animals except a few are polygamous. The monogamy in human species halted evolution and the biological progress of our epecies. Some sensible answers are most welcome.

You are right that monogamy is against nature and against evolutionary forces. But how can we compensate the ill effects of monogamy because polygamy is against social equality. I think the only way to compensate the ill effects of monogamy is by popularizing artificial insemination of selected donors among childless couples.

Although i personally err toward the safety of monogamy, i do concede that man seems a wandering polygamous animal.
Given the artifice of modern relationships, it is very difficult for man to chose a suitable mate for life.
Deodorant soaps, perfumes and air conditioned interiors contribute to the sensory disorientation of mankind. How is a post puberty individual supposed to sniff out a potential mate without the help of an unadulterated pheromone path?
shopping for a concubine at the mall and presenting her to the family hardly makes it easier. The complexity of social interaction only confuses the genders. Take the clothes and customs away and the rest is all animal.
There is a reason why monogamy is mostly preferable for our species, damage control. Take a tour of any country with high rates of sexually transmitted diseases, and the local mores are the most virulent vehicle to self destruction. keeping the game at home limits exposure to the multiple partner propagation of virus and other such little annoyances.
Marriage or civil union is a character building experience and only humans can appreciate this, wolves practice this highly developed sense of narrow community as well. renegades are free to leave the tribe and inseminate hybrids with altruistic progeny. This is also a marginal safety valve to insure a balance of genetic traits.
Therefore, nature is as nature choses to do and humans will survive, no matter how many fictitious laws contradict their instincts. Go forth and subdivide, i shall stay home with my honey and count our chickens instead.

When the birth rate of male to female is 1 to 1, monogamy is important in maintaining social order.

What has change for human beings is that more than genetic evolution is taking place. We now have social and technological evolution that allow people to survive and pass its genes forward with less natural selection. We are a species that allows the "un-fit" to perpetuate. Social and technological advances allow the human gene pool to diversify, which may not be a bad thing. It could mean that if there is ever a very contagious and deadly disease that we cannot cure, many people may die but hopefully not everyone will.

Who's to say monogamy is against evolutionary progress? The thing about mammals is, instead of laying hundreds of eggs or something, they have only a few offspring. Thus, the human monogamous family could be an evolution from that concept, in order to best take care of the next offspring. One could also argue that it is an evolutionary feature to deal with STDs.

Those are just random examples I thought of. The point is, who's to say what's "against progress"? I think it's a bit presumptuous to assume that you can understand the interactions of the infinite factors that determine the survival of a species and be able to know what is "progress". The truth is, we can never understand/predict the factors of evolution; nobody could look at weird fishies from billions of years ago and predict what the infinite factors in evolution would dictate to be the dominant organism in the year 2007.

Because humans can never fully understand it, I believe that evolution is the physical observation of God's creation. (There's really no science vs. God conflict...) I believe that human morals, conscience, and soul, along with the intellect, are what have set us apart from the rest of the animals, and allowed us to be so successful in improving our survival.

Good question. :)

Huh? So if I don't screw around on my wife I'm halting evolution! The answer to your question is that it is neither. You are committing a false dichotomy and an Inductive fallacies, namely, a hasty generalization.

You are giving us two choices when in fact there are at least three, the third being no effect and others having little or much bearing on the conclusion. I don't see any factual evidence that demonstrates what you are proposing, one way or the other and I have not ever heard of any. If you have some additional information then please present it.

Thanks

Monogamy is UNnatural, that is why so many marriages break up. What may be un natural is our expectations that people can control themselves and have only one partner till death due us part! I don't believe that the evolution of human species has been halted at all. Monogamy is rare.

Yes, Human reproductive habits are pro nature. Present monogamous social system is justified. Yours fears are unfounded and not ethical. There is no sensible answer. The answer is inherent in the sense of the person.

Man's emergence as a dominate species itself is in defiance of nature. He was essentially a mammal who was to have been moving about in the jungles on all fours, as all the monkeys do. As a matter of fact, that is the threshold of man's civilisation. His intellect has always gave him an advantage over other species in controlling nature and other species. This progress of man will some day meet a road block.

Why you advocate for polygamous social system why not polyandrous social system? Human population in the world has already crossed all time record that there is an acute shortage of food, land, pollution, even drinking water leave aside the growing unemployment, poverty & crime in the society & you seek more humans in the name of biological progression of our species. For biological progress of our species what is required mutation of genes that will be for development of newer & better genetic human species, for this inter religious, inter caste or creed, inter regional, inter racial Marriages should be encouraged that will give rise to better quality of offspring’s rather then indulging in polygamy or polyandry way of life. But unfortunately most of the humans lack this scientific way of thinking & indulge in marital union amongst their own caste or creed or race or religion & some don’t mind in their own family with cousins, neice, nephews etc now you tell me will all this give rise to better quality of offspring’s or deformities, diseased, physically & mentally weak offspring’s ? Hope you will be satisfied with my reply. I can go on this subject as long you want so write to me directly.

Monogamous social system can not be called against nature. It is a more civilised way of living.

There should be difference between beast and human. One should be be considerate for others feelings and respect social laws as natural. You should be thankful to nature for taking birth in this civilised world.

As somebody already said "who will stop me taking away your wallet?". Don't you think that, it is simply barberic if somebody takes away your wealth, women and wine because he is more strong than you are? Humans are given
the power of thinking. It is a GOD's gift exclusively given to humans. The super brain given should be used to develop and benifit others as well. Just think of a society where there is no law and order. Only power is strength. In such a society 'survival for the fittest' prevails.

In fact monogomy in human species has given them to think rightly and logically. What is the use of wars and killings. Do you really think that advancement of science and technogly is possible if all humans behave like beasts and fight among themselves for the sake of mating.

Be happy that, now we can bless the childless couple with children with the help of science. We are able to produce all variety of healthy foods that mankind require by various scientific methods.

Man with his power of thinking is able to reach other planets and be capable of exploring nature to benifit his mankind and other species of nature like animals, birds and plants.
