You have many answers and they are all right depending on what part of the country you live in. I always call it "potluck." However, I have heard "covered dish," "share-a-dish," too.

It is called a 'potluck' dinner. You may specify to certain guests to bring a dessert, others to bring a main, a salad or an entree option. It is a fun and interesting type of party and takes the burden off the host.

In N.Z an old phrase we use (not so much anymore due to P.Cness) is 'ladies a plate' - which means all the women bought a plate of their home cooking.

Its potluck.

This was a new concept to me (originally from East coast). Got used to it. Friend of mine recently moved here and asked me about it I described it thus:

"Bring your own food and bring your own booze" share it with people, some of whom you don't like. Then thank the host for a lovely evening.

Thank you no.
