Butter is made from the heavy cream that floats to the top of milk. It can be made salted or unsalted.

Parkay, oleo, margarine, I can't Believe It's Not butter, etc., are all made from vegetable oil.

I think the invention of oleo resulted from milk shortages in WWII. In the old days, the dairy lobby convinced Congress to outlaw the yellow coloring. When you bought your oleo, it was white and the yellow came in a little side package!
