get them to watch an inconvenient truth...i am 13 and i am so grateful to that movie for showing us what is going on in this world... i wouldn't want this beautiful world to die away
post pictures around town of dying animals such as polar bears drowned in water due to global warming that will really get there attention because everyone is a sucker forcute animals right?
find the groups of people who do care and get a volunteering cleaning team to go around the town...teach them about it while you clean ... pay the young ones so they realize...kids are suckers for $money$
i really wish i could offer more suggestions maybe give me a bit to think about it and i will sit down and edit this answer and write it again with a better response and easier-to-read format :P i hope you find a great way to get that message out there.

This is a very controversial issue, it is something that the media is promoting, when in fact the majority of the well known scientists say that there is no proof that global warming really exists. It is only a theory. In fact some of the magazines that have stories on global warming and list some of these well know scientist as people that claim it to be true are being sued to remove the scientists names, because they do not believe in global warming and there is no Scientific proof that Global warming is happening. I stick with what Science says and ignore the Media, I would advise you to do the same so that you don't end up with egg on your face.

Tell them that one volcanic eruption puts out more hydrocarbons during the event than man does over several decades. Tell them, that while trees do capture CO2, they only store it and release it as they decompose. They have little net effect on clearing the atmosphere of CO2. Tell them that the term 'average temperature' is meaningless (not to mention immeasurable). If your town's winter temperature was -300, and the summer temp was +400, the average would be 50 degress. Get it? Show them the varying sea levels that have occurred over the millenia. Use Cairo as an example. The remains of temples have been under the Mediterrainean for centuries because they were built during cooler times and were inundated because of climate changes that happened a thousand years ago. Tell them that the Dark Ages were the result of those same changes, completely unassociated with human activity. Educate them on the mini-Ice Age that occurred in the 1700's which led to the French Revolution. People were starving because cereal crops failed due to colder temps.
All that being said, I agree with the premise that human activity is influencing global climate change, but you must be prepared to defend your position vis a vis historical changes. One talk show pundit put it this way; "If your thermostat is set at 90 degrees and you have a candle burning, why would you blame the candle for the fact that it's too hot in your house?" Your point needs to be, why would you light a candle if it's already too hot?
Human activity is not the only factor contributing to global warming. The sun is hotter today than it was 500 years ago; it goes through cycles of hotter and cooler. When Al Gore, et al, points his finger at humans as the cause for global warming, to the exclusion of other factors, he loses credibility, and so will you. Your argument should be framed in the sentiment that we shouldn't agitate the natural processes at work, but we should try to mitigate them by being as contributory-neutral as possible.
When I was in high school, I worked in a restaurant at the beach. If we had a heat wave going on, the owner would turn off the lights inside (we had large windows) to mitigate the 'hotness'. At the time, I didn't understand how a dozen or so lights could make a difference, but every little bit helps. He was trying to keep the temperature inside the restaurant as close to the temperature outside as he could. It was still hot, but he wasn't going to make it any hotter, if he could help it. That's the key to getting non-believers to help mitigate the damage. Why exacerbate the situation?

Show them Al Gore's An Inconvenient Truth. It is pretty pathetic that we have the technology to reduce our country's net emissions to that of the 1980's but our government would rather spend money spinning global warming as a "theory." Of thousands of papers written by actual scientists, not a single one disagrees that humans are behind the changes in climate.
The whole "Is it a theory" thing is just proof at how good governments are at confusing people.
But, if you do indeed live in a small town, don't worry about convincing the people there, the real way to address global warming is to get governments to sign into law regulations that dictate actions they have to take.
But the best way to do that is to make environmentalism cheaper.
For example, biodiesel is made from vegitables and is rediculously cheap compared to crude. Like 40 cents a gallon. The real issue is getting gas companies to make the shift. Until there are biodiesel refueling stations, people that have such vehicles will have to have two cars. One that uses biodiesel for use within range of their home (where they make it themselves) and one that uses crude gas for longer travel (since that one can be refilled away from home).
A comic once made a joke that the way to get companies to shift to biodiesel was to get fast food companies to start converting used french fry grease into it, so instead of paying companies to haul it away, they can sell it.

it's cool that you're trying to get involved and all, but global warming is not really a problem.
Oh, I don't deny the fact that it's happeneing, I'm just saying it's not our fault, you see, the amount of stuff we pump into the environment is acutally extremely minimal, a single volcanic eruption puts out more harmful vapors than all of mankind has put out in the entire span of recorded history.
Global warming is a natural environmental function, I can't tell you why it works, just that it does, following this global warming cycle we will get an ice age, and then another global warming, and then another ice age, it's been going on since the beginning of time.
However, I do believe that we need to do something about the air quality, clean emmissions are a must if we're going to survive much longer without everyone on earth having damaged lungs, and we need to get off gasoline, for health and economic reasons, if we don't wean outself off petroleum then when the world is finally pumped dry it'll be like a heroin addict being locked up without his stash, it'll be catastrophic.

What exactly do you want people to do? Do you think it's possible for humans to change the climate? How? Do you understand that the earth would be warming even if there were no humans? That's what the UN IPCC says. Climate change is natural -- if not, why were there previous ice ages and why did they retreat?
Humans may be one of many contributing factors but even that is debated by scientists. If us humans did not burn another drop of fuel global warming would continue. That's another UN IPCC conclusion.
So what would you like your city council to do? Quit living and starve? I notice that you haven't given up your energy guzzling computer.

Global warming is still only a theory, more and more scientists are leaning towards a natural climate shift instead of a man made affect.

sorry this answer is a bit long ,but you are looking for background information and that is what a lot of this is .
look in the internet for a document called Plan B
by Lester E Brown who is the director and founder of the global institute of Environment in the United states .he has compiled a report based on all the satalite information available from NASA,and all the information that has
come from Universities and American embassies WORLD WIDE ,
his little book--a planet under stress , Plan B has been trans lated into many languages and won the best book award in 2003
here is some of his stuff mixed with a bit of mine
Global warming is in theory reversable, but it will mean global co operation between all countries ,and taking into account human nature and the world politics ,it is unlikely that this will happen,
At least not untill we are all in the middle of planetary disastres and it becomes a battle for the survival of humanity every where.
SOLUTIONS
if you want to help the planet ,plant a tree every week ,if everyone on the planet did we we would be able to reverse the destructive processes
reduce carbon emisions, and they are already working on that by alternative forms of energy and regulations on carbon producing materials, aerosol cans, burning rubbish, industrial chimneys, powerplants etc.
the capture of carbon and the production of water and assist the aquiferous manta.
the world bank pays large subsidies for reforrestation to capture carbon and the best tree for this is the Pawlonia
Waterharvesting projects ,such as millions of small dams.to redirect over ground waterflows from the rains into the ground to supply subteranian water supplies.
the protection of existing forrests.
stop building more highways, urban planning to include vegetation stop building cities encourage people to return to the land to conduct their business from there which now has become possible thanks to the internet.
education to motivate people to auto sufficiency by building more home food gardens.
education on environmental awareness
education on family planning to curb over´populaion
Agricultural education and improvements to follow the principals or sustainability and soil management.
more environmental or land ,design to prevent bush fires, such as--fire breaks
,more dams.regulations and control for public behaviour
alternative effeciant public transport to discourage the use of the internal conbustion engine
recicling wastes,limit water use
POLITICS
ecologists and scientists who work for politicians ,get paid by these politicians and they have downplayed the facts because solutions are expensive and means change and change effects many peoples incomes, and upsets profit margins,so most of the world is kept in the dark of the real things that are going on.
most people doubt if humanity EFFECTS THE ENVIRONMENT,and now the climate change
thousands of people have no doubt about it and the many who are dead are past caring
many people forget about desertification
desserts are like a fire they gobble up the edges with the heat and so grow.
forrests regulate the climate ,they absorb heat during the day and release it at night ,that is why desserts are freezing at night and cooking during the day
Forrests produce water ,and regulate the atmosphere we breathe (the absorb carbon )as well as protecting the earth from the sun
when forrest are being exchanged for ashalt, concrete and desserts
what is gonna keep this planet habitable for us
the carbon production is something else on top
and this seems to ocupy people the most
and the polution is something else again
all are factors in climate change
Global warming is a very complex collection of many effects
this text is limited to effects of people in the country, industrial effects on the environment and the internal combustion engine as well as the over all effects of cities ,is another story
climate change is caused principally by desertification ,and most desertification is caused by man
the thinner ozone layer helps to speed this up.and this is caused mainly by air polution ,also as a result of mans actions
DEFORESTATION
in the past
the Building of the Spanish Armada deforrested Spain
the Phoenician trading fleet turned Lebanon in a dessert
Ganges Khan put everything to the sword and torch, then filled the wells with sand,
the sun finished of the job and whole countries turned to wastelands.
He would have been envious of the effects of modern day farming.Slash and burn destroys the protective vegetation (which helps to form the soil ),
leaving it open to the Sun ,and then ,wind and, water erosion.
The Plough turns the soil ,killing micro-biotic life (essential to soil building) and accelerates the drying out .
Pressures of the :vehicles, cattle and rain impact brings the salt to the surface.
Mono cultures ,aided by chemicals Exhaust and pollutes the soil .
Adding to this the effects of overgrazing has resulted in large scale desertification.
expanding populations and expanding farming ,that has to keep pace with the expanding populations are very strong forces that encroach upon the rainforest's
clearing them for farming and settlement areas .
Rainforest's always are in third world countries and always in third world countries corruption and the need for money s highest
there are natural cycles in the planets life
but a lot is influenced by mans existance ,and this is increasing with overpopulation, putting strains on Natural resources and increasing contaminations as well as destructions of essential componants the ensure living conditions for all life forms
in North Africa,India,Mexico ,millions of people are effected by land loss and desertification and some have died as a result
in china, thousands of what used to be farmers are running for their lives from the dust storms that have burried their towns and turned their lands into dessert,
,the Sahara is growing by 7 kilometers a year
and all of the desserts we know are a results of mans actions ,and they are increasing ,not getting less ,in the dinosaurs days ,there were no desserts.
collectively this planet is drying up because of bad farming practices like, over grazing and fertilizers,
each degree rise in temperature means 10%crop loss
and there is less and less water (because of deforestation),to irrigate this production ,
and there are less and less farmers to do it..
who are overpumping deep carbon aquifiers
who are plowing more and more unstable lands because they have lost so many million hectares to desertification ,
because of bad farming practises ,such as using fertilizers and heavy machinary or over grazing
RISING SEAS
The northpole is melting ,and we will know it without ice in our life times.
this does not affect the sea level because it is ice that is already in the water.but the melting ice from Green land and the south pole ,are another matter
