I have the same skin type you described. You're less likely to burn and will tan more evenly using a tanning rather than the sun. Remember to start off with 2 or 3 short sessions (10 min.) in a lower intensity bed - wait 2-3 days between sessions. Then it should be safe to do 20min. in the high intens. bed. Tanning twice a wk. works well - if there is no redness w/20min. OK to go 30min. Alot of salons have high and low intensity beds for this purpose and will suggest a similar schedual to all first-timers.

You tan the same in a tanning bed as you do in the sun. I believe most signs outside tanning beds say this. Or something along the lines of "if you do not tan in the sun, it is unlikely that you will tan by using this machine". (something like that anyway!)
So, if you burn the first few times in the sun, you'll get the same result in a tanning bed.
I would suggest only going for 5-10 minutes the first time and gradually increasing the time spent in the bed. That way, you lessen your chances of getting extremely burnt. It's hard to do without getting anxious, but you won't regret it! A bad tanning bed burn is the worst!

There are three kinds of tan beds these days. The bed-which if you go 5 times you will have a good tan base.
There is the standup kind-that will burn you
and !
There is a special Italian tanning bed, that you stand in as well, but it takes less time and gives you a gorgeous color.
The regular tanning bed will give you a good start.

Don't use tanning beds!!! One 45 minute session is as bad for your health(inside and out) as having direct sunlight on you with no protection. It causes cancer and when you are older, you will probably get very bad wrinkles and sun spots, if your lucky if you're not it's skin cancer on top of all of that. I'm just trying to spread the truth and help protect people.
I hope this helps someone!
