King David referred to it as a matter of a broken spirit and a contrite heart. Jesus is also seen as a genuine sacrifice in that, as a human being He was a perfect substitute for us on the cross, so that by His death we might have life.

A scraped knee in saving a puppy from being run over or the lives of the rescuers of 9/11. These are true sacrifices because no one threatened a punishment or prophesied a heaven to solicit them.

It is not a general sacrifice unless it costs you something. The earlier baseball reference is actually a good example. You are giving yourself up for an out for the greater good of the team. Advancing a runner into scoring position possibly. When this is done willingly, it is a general sacrifice.

Sacrificing your time and comfort for a greater good, like helping others or volunteering at a hospital, soup kitchen or fire department. Even giving money to charity is a form of sacrifice.

It means not to do the sacrifice because you want something.
Just do the sacrifice out of pure love for the person you are sacrificing to.
