Hi, currently I'm going to the gym 5 times a week and run 4 miles in about 40 mins at speed 5.6, no stopping. I'm also doing some weight lifting and eating healthy. Will running help me build leg muscle or will it just burn fat?

My stats: 130 lbs 19 male 5'8

running will not increase their size bc you are not overloading them. overloading the muscles (adding weight) is the only way to make them bigger. keep up with the cardio, that's great for burning calories and fat and keeping your heart healthy. in your weightlifting routine the best and fastest leg builders are squats and leg presses. extensions and lunges will give you some nice detail in those newly developed (bigger) muscles! gradually keep adding weight about 3 to 5 lbs every 2 to 3 wks for best results. also keep the reps low - no more than 12 per set for building muscle. eat a high protein diet too. remember your muscles get bigger at rest so let your recovery time between workouts for legs be no less than 48 hrs. they are big and need time to recover and rebuild. good luck!

running does not stimulate the legs muscles in that way. the load used (bodyweight) and the time under tension is insufficient to stimulate hypertrophy. sprinting would provide more stimulus than would distance running and with a much more positive effect on the endocrine system.
