Yes. Got bitten by a brown recluse spider. Ended up in hospital a week later for surgery and iv antibiotics for five days. I ended up with a crater in my back almost an inch deep and nearly 4" across which after 3 months of having a nurse change the dressings twice a day and God knows how many antibiotic pills is finally starting to heal. At first I did not even know I had been bitten, then suddenly had this boil - like thing that hurt. Never had a boil before, thought it was a boil. It grew a bit each day, then in 2 days went from maybe half an inch across and red and hurt some to 4 inches across and turned black and hurt like the devil. That was when I went to the Dr. who sent me to the ER. Gonna stomp every spider I see for the rest of my life.

Though I've been bitten by spiders a few times, the bite itself has always been painless. Afterwards, though, in one case the site became a bit inflamed, itchy and mildly infected; it cleared up in a few days with some antibiotic ointment.
A wasp sting, at least for me, is instantly a bit painful but the pain ceases within a second and there is no subsequent swelling or infection; I haven't been stung by a bee.
The difference is the venom: spider venom liquefies tissue, such as an insect's insides; wasp venom (and some scorpions and ants) may be just formic or acetic acid, which is less of an insult to the body.
There may also be some protein injected, which can cause an allergic reaction in some people.

When I was a preteen I was bit by a spider on my stomach. I don't know what kind it was. At first it appeared to look like a mosquito bite and it itched. After one or two days (it has been so long I don't quite remember how long it took) it started itching more and more. This day my family was going out to dinner to a place a couple of hours away. On the way home I was itching so bad I was beside myself. My mother looked at the bite and it was red and swollen. By the time we got home my entire stomach was red and swollen (remember it originally looked like a mosquito bite). Upon returning home, my father dropped the rest of my family off and took me to the emergency room. The doctor prescribed an ointment. When my father took the prescription to the pharmacy and told the pharmacist what was going on, the pharmacist also suggested that my parents "wrap my stomach in plastic wrap" to keep the air away.

A lot of jokes were made about turning me into a sandwich (because of the plastic wrap) but it started feeling better right away and after a few days it was gone.

There are all kinds of spiders and insects that can bite, and each person can react differently. This is my story.

My mom was bitten by a black widow and a brown recluse within a year of each other. I didn't even think the brown recluse was in California, but apparently they have them in Alameda (the island, not the county).

The black widow healed up pretty quickly.

But the brown recluse made a huge section of her arm swell up and decay, and the doctors had to remove the chunk of flesh so it wouldn't spread. My mom said it hurt a lot more to have the doctor yank the piece of flesh off than the bite and decay. I'm still not sure why the doctor grabbed the chunk and pulled it off...my mom swears the other doctors that had gathered to see the terrible bite were shocked, and didn't seem to like that the doctor had done it so quickly.

At any rate, my mom must have really bad luck. I wonder sometimes if she's really some sort of spider queen...

Good luck, and don't let the spiders bite!

yes but i was sleeping i woke up and my arm itched like crazy so i scratched it.i didnt think anything of it got dressed and had some coffee and went to work.about an hour later my arm was swollen to 3 times its regular size and it was hot and itchy i could see where the bite marks were looked infected.i had to go to the emergency room.it was an allergic reaction.they gave me an antibiotic and benadryl and i was off work and no lifting or housework for7 days.it was awful and the first time itever happened to me.the doctor said our bodys change as we age and now i am allergic to fly, spider and mosquito bites and i had those same reactions on at least 2 other occassions.i learned not to scratch wash the bite off with hot soapy water and put neosporin on it and take benadryl and it lessens my chance of a trip to the doctor.good luck.i also have spider traps in my home and those electronic things to keep bugs and rodents out.

I have been bitten by a spider. It did not hurt. The area was a little swollen and itchy.

I have seen a few nasty spider bites in my time! And after seeing them, I am also spider-phobic!
