How old is your pup?

Ideally this should be done within the first week of life if its going to be done. After that it becomes a much more complicated surgery.

If your pup's back dews are 'flapping in the wind', meaning they are only connected to his back leg with skin, there is no actual bone attaching the toe to the leg, go ahead and have it done when you get him neutered. These are more likely to catch on something and tear, causing a lot of pain, and likely a higher vet bill than just having done at neuter.

you didn't state what breed of dog your puppy is- in some breeds- dew claws are "required"( for show purposes- and such is stated in the breed standard) as is the case for Newfoundlands..... and some other breeds. But if this pup- is not going to be shown, and you feel that the dews will hinder the dogs well being( like catching on things and risk being torn off)... then have the dews removed when you have the pup spayed or neutered........ rear dew claws usually only require a stitch or two- but front dew claws, may require major surgery--- as the bones become stronger and thicker as the puppy matures... so these dews will be harder to remove and will cause the pup major pain upon removal...( breeder should have removed them when the pup was days old).. good luck to you and to your new puppy... please discuss this procedure with your veterinarian-- the longer you wait- the harder it will be on the puppy.

Dew claws should be taken off when they are just days old. it is easy on the puppies. Why would you want to have the dew claws removed. If there is nothing wrong then there is no need to do this to your dog and if you wanted them done then you should have had them remove where they were a few days old.

If you plan on hunting with your dog and being out in thick undergrowth bushes, you might consider having them removed. If they hang out and away from the leg and are only attached by skin, you might want to have them removed. If they are attached like the rest of the toes (with regular toe bone) and the dog is just going to be a great family house pet, their really is no reason to have them removed.....unless you put an e-collar on the dog, the healing is hindered by the fact that the dog chews and licks the site open and some times it ends up being more of a headache then anything else.

Dew claws should have been removed at the same time the dog's tail was docked. Take it to vet and don't wait too long.

NO~! NO WAY. NONE should be Dew clawed. WHY? because it is extremely painful surgery to begin with, also, they are there for reason~! The Dew-Claws were started by American Show dog breeders to give dogs a clean LOOK. They do not care about the dogs, but themselves. This is one of the hard cold truth of the world of AKC shows. Anyway, ANY dog should NEVER EVER be dew clawed. WHY? Think about it.

Dewclaw removal is usually done when the puppy is 2 days old or younger. I see it more as just a cosmetic surgery unless the dog will be doing activities that he could catch them on and hurt himself.

yes get them removed, like the first person said, they will get caught on stuff and cause problems. It is usually a quick little thing the vet can do at spay/neuter time.

Why wasn't this done before the pup was a week old? I am not sure a vet would do it now but you sure should find out though.
