Chuck Wepner...he was a nobody who fought Muhammad Ali and lasted 11 or 12 rounds and even knocked him down in one round

If there was a real life parallel to the fictional character, which is unlikely blogbaba would have picked a guy like Tex Cobb. For some reason the ex Bay City Michigan bar bouncer Eric Esch comes to mind, but why the "Butterbean" would remind me of Rocky Balboa is anybody's guess. I think I need to get off this computer, I'm losing it.

Sly said in an interview he picked aspects of about 10 or 12 famous fighters to embody Rocky when he was writing the script. So I guess the character was a mix.

Yeah, Wepner, "The Biscaynne Bleeder" knocked Ali down in Round 1---Ali later claimed that Wepner had stepped on his foot---and Ali battered Wepner for the next 12 or 15 rounds, never putting Wepner down. Sylvester Stallone was in the audience that evening, and the fight was his inspiration for writing the Rocky movies.

The Rocky character was loosely based on Chuck Wepner.
