My son at 2 wouldnt talk what a kid of his age should and he was diagnosed with autism. depends what other symptoms she has . tell her ped. cause at that age a kid should talk. You dont explain the problem, so this is just my 2 cents of what im assuming you asking,

She could have apraxia, where they are unable to speak but understands everything - not necessarily autistic. I would take her to be evaluated by a developmental pediatrician or neurologist ASAP. With proper therapy, and early intervention is key, she can learn to speak. ANd in the meantime, they can teach her some signs to help her communicate. In my son's preschool class, there is a little girl with apraxia. She's had extensive speech therapy since age 2 (she just turned 4 now) - probably about 6 months ago she started talking - her first word was "stupdendous"! But in school they also taught her some signs to help her communicate until her oral motor muscles had developed enough for her to speak. Her mother said she would only speak at home for a while, just started talking at school. HOpe this helps!!

IF she reaches for something but she doesn't ask for it don't give it to her... force her to say it. What ever the item is... like her sippie cup even if it is the only item there don't give in... she may call it a pop pop but whatever she calls it she'll speak... some children may not speak until 2 or 3 I have heard even 4 years old but there could be a chance that she could be deaf... try dropping something that will make a LOUD bang or crash sound if she jumps then she can hear. Personally would suggest that you get her hearing check ASAP if her parents haven't done so my interear never developed and I was 6 before my folks realized I was deaf... I was reading everyones lips haha but I speak fine cause I heard my own voice and hear OK with hearing aids. Strongly suggest that you force her to say something before giving her whatever item she is reaching for & get her ears checked!.. Hope it helps!

Well, first of all, have you had her hearing checked? You may want to start there. If you ask her to do something, does she do it? Does she make any sounds at all? If she makes sounds, just not words, she may be deaf, or hard of hearing. If she doesn't really make sounds, there may be a problem with her being tongue tied or other muscular problems. I would suggest going to your family doctor and explaining your concerns. If your granddaughter's parent's don't want to take it to they're doctor, ask your doctor what to do...they may give you some advice.

I am a speech-language pathologist who specializes in working with children under age 3. Does she say any words at all? She should have at least 50 words in her vocabulary at this age. Her pediatrician can refer her for an evaluation by a speech therapist to see if there is anything to be concerned about.

like she won't speak at all? does she make sounds or anything? my son is very similar. he's 17 months and doesn't say any words clearly. but he's very smart and i'm not really worried about it. you might want to make sure that everything is ok with her hearing, just in case.

you may want to have her ears checked by your doctor, she may have fluid in her ears that is preventing her from hearing you well enough to talk. my son didnt speak until he was 2, we found out he had fluid in his ears, once they gave him medicine, he starting talking, he is a bit behind but catching up fast. no matter what she needs to see her doctor. I wish you luck.
