Every piece of property in Texas has a record of its history. That record is called an abstract. The abstract is kept by the county recorder.

So, head over to the courthouse and look up that address at the county recorder's office.

Telephone and schedule an appointment to visit the Travis County Register of Deeds office (or equivalent). They should be able to assist you or demonstrate the method for record research for the property in question...

______

PERSONAL NOTE: This is an ordinary task for real estate agents who need to verify ownership and to determine if there are in "old" liens on a particular property. Sometimes mineral rights are transferred or sold and the buyer may or may not have made inquiry (at their possible great disadvantage).

Another technique for "looking" for histories is to contact the oldest newspaper in the county and researching occurences for the property in their archives. Speak with a librarian in Austin or Travis County to learn if they carry a "spool" file or microfiche of 1900s newspapers. If there is an existing newspaper of that era, they may have a "subject file" with the specific address given.

Contact the Austin History Center http://www.ci.austin.tx.us/library/ahc/ to find out about the history of that building, which now houses the Cold Stone Creamery.
