First of all, determine the RMS power rating of the amp. An amplifier that says "1200 watts" on the case may have an actual RMS power rating that's considerably lower, and it's the RMS rating you want to use. Second, determine how long the wire run will need to be from the amplifier to the battery, because the length of the wire plays a part as well.

Once you have that information, follow the instructions on this page: http://www.crutchfieldadvisor.com/ISEO-rgbtcspd/learningcenter/car/cable_gauge_chart.html to determine what size power wire you need.

Yes, if it is coming straight off a distribution block that has a larger wire from the batt. going to it.
You said it'd be coming all the way from the batt., so, no.
You're gonna need 4g for the amp to perform right.
Use the same size ground wire as the power wire.

Good Luck!

The amp is in the box ? you should connect the amp to the batt first ,, you cant connect the speaker to the batt , go with bigger gauge wire , the wire you asked about will power the amp.. but i would use better wires from the amp to the batt..try to use good wires .. 8 will be fine for 2 ,, 10sss enjoy.
