You are correct in that you have to take classes. You can go several different routes to get to an airline or you can learn to fly just to have fun.

You can go in the military and have them teach you.
You can go to a college and get a degree and learn how to fly at the same time.
You can go to a flight school where all you do is learn how to fly. (No degree)
Or you can go to your local airport fixed base operator (FBO) and hire an instructor to teach you in your spare time.

Each one of them has their pluses and minuses. I would recommend going on the AOPA website. There is alot of information on there about learning to fly.

Yes you can be a pilot if you wear glasses or contacts. I wear glasses myself and I am a captain for an airline. All that is required for the airlines is that your eyes are corrected to 20/20.

Good luck.

You can have a go very easily by signing up for a trial lesson at a local airfield. Then you can get good advice and see if you like it.

The first step towards independent flyong is to get your private pilot's license (PPL), which requires a minimum of 45 hours flying, 10 of which must be solo. To achieve this you sign up with a flying school for a course of lessons. They can be quite expensive c. £120 an hour.

Before you can fly commercial aircraft, you will need to obtain a commercial pilot's license. This is much more involved and more expensive. Many people that do this will get a job with an airline and try and get sponsored.

FInally, you ask if it's OK to fly with glasses or contact lenses. The answer is yes, and many people do. If you wanted to fly fast jets for the military it would be a problem, but for ordinary flying its ok. A point to note - all pilots must get an aviation medical and this must renewed periodically. This is a safety issue, since you and your passengers don't want you to have a fit or something at the controls.

I fly recreationally, it's seriously good fun, and I would encourage you to give it a go. a half hour trial lesson costs about £75. Try the UKGA website for listings and details of one near you.

As allready mentioned in one of the other answers, there are many ways you can learn. You need to figure out why you want to fly. If you want to make a career of flying, the most feasible way is either military or a flight school. If you want to fly for the reasons I do, just because you love flying, you have a few more options. I think it was 2 years ago that the F.A.A. opened the doors for more people to fly. They started a sport class license. Wtih this license you are limited a great deal in what you can fly. You can also just have one passeger in the plane with you. I think for, recreational flying, you are much better served by getting your private pilots license and then getting your instrument rating. I think the best place to do this is your local FBO. They usually will work around your schedule and they can help you get financing if you need it. As for your "bad eyes", I hope your vision can be corrected to 20/20. I hate to say this, and do not mean for it to sound bad, but if your vision can not be corrected to 20/20, you really do not need to be flying. You should really go get a flight physical for a third class medical before you spend any money on training. Someone at your local airport should be able to tell you a doctor close by that is qualified to do the exam. Take my advice on this. I had allready invested alot of money before I went to take my physical. When I took it finally, I was deferred to Oklahoma, City. I ended up having to spend about $12,000.00 in medical bills proving I was physically able to fly.

YOU DO NOT NEED TO HAVE 20/20 vision. Everyone thinks you do but you dont. You need to have glasses or something to help your vision if you dont have 20/20 vision. EVERY ONE HAS WHAT IT TAKES TO BE A PILOT. It might take longer for some people because of money. It is not that much. I have payed $14k and got the following licence
1. Private pilot licence ($4224.53 (ground school is wtih)
2. Instrument rating ($4422.38 (ground school is with)
3. Multi engine ($2546.60 (ground school is with)
4. Commercial pilot ($2605.23 (with ground school)
NOTE ALL PRICES ARE FOR THE TAMPA BAY FL AREA!

Cessna 172 Sky hawk would be a lot easier to fly than a jet. It will take any where from 3 weeks to 9 months. You first thing you need to do is to find flight Training near you. You will first need to get your Private Pilot. That will cost about $4224.53 with ground school. Then comes Instrument, instrument is the hartes in my mind. Instrument costs about $4422.38 with ground school. Next my favorite is Multi engine. It is about $2546.60. Then comes commercial pilot. It will cost about $2605.23 with ground school. This is a place in Tampa that I am getting this information so the prices are for Tampa bay. All together it is about 14k.

This is for the US.

your eyes need to be 20/20, but that can be done with glasses, contacts, etc. Flying is really not difficult, just different, you are moving in three diminsions instead of two as you are in a car. The biggest draw back about learning to fly is the cost involved.

If you like and understand the basics of aerodynamics and navigation, then a private pilot's license will not be hard to obtain. You can have good eyes by wearing glasses!
