Instead of running 500 laps on a short track, why not run the event like a normal grassroots race. Have the time trials in the afternoon, then start heat races made up of 10-12 cars. The first four finishers in each heat make the feature. The rest of the field could be filled with finishers from a "C" and "B" mains. Top finishers from the "C" advance to the "B". Top finishers from the "B" would advance to the rear of the "A". The number advanced could be adjusted to fill the field This is the way most short tracks run their weekly shows. It insures that the good cars will make the "A" main by placing well in the heat races. But it also give a chance to a car that may have had trouble early in the night to make the main by finishing well in the "B" main. Heat races could be 10-12 laps, the C main could be 15-20 laps, the B main could be 25-35 laps, and the A main could be 100 laps. The race would take as much time to run as a 500 lap event but the cars would run more all-out racing lap
