Good question!

I've noticed that many people tend to use their vehicles as an extension of their personalities. If someone passes them, they may take it as an insult because that other person is driving a more powerful vehicle and just "showed them up" by passing them. Drivers who think this way are pretty unstable.

Yeah, people are pretty weird at times.Too bad the driver's exams don't include a psychological profile!

Keep out of the way of the nut behind you who is tailgating--let them pass! Better to have them in front of you where you can keep an eye on them.

Stay safe.

Well lets change things a bit, Would you cut in line at the supermarket repeatedly or maybe at the cell phone store or anywhere you have to wait for long periods of time? probably not right! So why do you do it on the freeway especially when the sign reads left or right lane closed ahead in the construction zones, and there you go along with the rest of morons that have no common sense. Passing everyone that do follow directions, and are law abiding citizens. I don't get it!! you're time must be more precious than all the rest of ours.

Face! Being in Southeast Asia for 28 years I didn't need explanation; but to make the answer intelligent I turned to wikipedia. To my surprise there's two answers. Eastern and Western and I've included sources.

Back to my humble opinion. People don't like to be passed. How many times have you started to overtake a car and it speeds up. There's enough subconscious animal in us that we have a sublimal need to dominate.

Even nice people who would not admit to ulterior motives might be agra-noyed when some unknown entity usurps their position. (Summary: We're ego driven animals)

Well, if you're behind someone in the same lane, then you change lanes, pass the person, and change back to the lane that person is in, you're telling them they're driving too slow, and that you're really impatient.

And that person knows that you're feeling impatient, and that puts pressure on them, which stresses them out, which makes them act like jerks
