AVG is free and works well if even a bit slow.
Spybot S&D is free and works very well against most malware
Adaware SE a freebie from lavasoft and it too is very good.

I assume you had some bad experience in the past with antivirus programs. The good news is that there is no shortage of good free antivirus programs. The 3 most popular are: Antivir, Avast and AVG. Other good antivirus programs are AOL Virus Shield and the special edition of Norton Antivirus, which is part of the Google Pack. You can find Antivir, Avast and AVG at (http://www.filehippo.com/software/antivirus/). In regards to the other 2 programs, AOL Virus Shield is actually created by Kaspersky, one of the largest and oldest security software developers. AOL contracted Kaspersky to develop a special version of their outstanding antivirus program. Kaspersky has always been among the top 5 best antivirus programs. You might have heard about the Google Pack. Google collected a group of free software programs which anyone can download and use. The software programs which make up the pack are intend for those you just bought a computer and want to quickly bring their computer up to speed. Google managed to have both Norton and PC Tools offer special editions of their antivirus and anti spyware programs, respectively. Norton Antivirus and PC Tool's Spyware Doctor. I highly recommend Antivir and AOL Virus Shield. Both offter great protection and they do not use up all your computer's resources which many other antivirus programs do. AOL Virus Shield at (http://www.activevirusshield.com/antivirus/freeav/index.adp?) and Google Pack at (http://pack.google.com/intl/en/pack_installer.html?hl=en&gl=us)

Its a little slow, but you can try a free online one like http://www.trendmicro.com , but i would use it in connection with something like AVG (http://free.grisoft.com).

Very few anti-virus catch everything, it is always a good idea to use one as your primary and then occasionally supplement it with something else.
