I know for sure though that it is not spiders, worms, snakes, and anything that flies. I am especially afraid of birds and butterflies...lol

There's a fun book I have that specifically addresses this question (see source below). Some of the topics discussed are the spiritual and magical roles of nature, awakening your spirit totems and reading nature signs. There are exercises and rituals you can do to get in touch with your totem. It also discusses hundreds of different animals from birds to insects to reptiles. Check it out!

Whatever animal you feel closest to. Whatever animal you watch playing in the field, or swimming in the ocean and think "wouldnt it be nice if I could do that for a day". Basicaly in indian tribes, the whole tribe would have a totem, aside from tricksters, personal totems are unheard of by traditional standards. Though used often in new age paper backs on "modern shamanism". Tricksters include coyote, raven, and spider. Also their is the fox, who is sometimes a trickster and sometimes not. However all in all, if you feel you are connected to a animal, and want it to be your "spirit animal", then it is. Aswell, the creature that scares you the most can be your spirit animal.

You probably alreay know it, look around your house. Do you have an aful lot of wolves, or kittens, or turtles or something? Can you just not pass up a little figurine of an elephant? If you find few animals in your house, just start looking in stores and around town and see what speaks to you.

You do a shamanic journey or meditate on it... and it's better to pick up a book at a nearby bookstore in the metaphysical section, or somesuch to guide yourself... and trust me, you'd be surprised what your animal guides might be. They don't all always mean what you think they might.

Trust me, you don't want a spider anyway. I know someone who's totem is a spider.

Describe yourself in a few adjectives. Post them on Yahoo answers and ask people what animal they think you are describing. Then pick from the list.

I advise finding your local metaphysical shop they tend to have guided meditations that help with finding that out.
