Everyone knows that HD TV's look kinda bad in standard 480i resolution, this is the normal resolution that cable sends your TV. I don't have access to HD cable...yet. But I do have an up-conversion DVD player, which makes my movies look awesome on my 57" HD TV. If I got a dvd recorder and recorded my shows from TV and then put the dvd in my up-convert player, would I get pseudo-HD from my TV? Seems like a pretty good idea to me.

Your standard cable (non-HD) coming into your television is ONLY showing (on it's best day) about 300 lines of resolution...The reason it looks so bad on your HDTV is because the BUILT-IN UP-CONVERTER is amplifying the "crappiness" of the original signal.

All HDTVs have a an "up-converter" built in...Sometimes these are just "DE-INTERLACERS" and only turn "480i" into "480p"....And other times the up-converter is actually a "SCALER" and turns your "480i" into "960i".

Really POOR up-converters can only handle a clean video signal like a DVD...Anything else like VCR, cable or analog antenna broadcast looks TERRIBLE...A good up-conversion chip ("Farujua DCDi") can even make a VHS tape look almost Hi-Def.

The reason your up-conversion DVD player looks so good is that is has a better up-converter than your HDTV...So your theory might be correct...Recording cable onto DVD will circumvent the TV's up-converter altogether.

Give it a try, but keep your receipt.

It MAY look a little better if you do that, but I doubt that it will because the signal that you are starting with is still used, but it just enhanced. Think of it like taking a picture on your computer and re-sizing it larger, then again, then again, it will lose clarity. Check and see if the recorder you buy can input w/ a coax and show live tv out of component or HDMI, this might help you picture problem.

I don't know what brand TV you have, but ALL HDTVs upconvert their input signal to match their native resolution.
So, there is no need for upconverting DVDs.
I am sure your TV will display a much better picture directly from the source than going through: compress -> decompress -> upscale.
If you have an HDTV make sure you get a digital signal (satellite or digital cable or digital off-the-air) and you will not need any gimmics to make it look better

I have never heard of a HDTV having a built upconverter. I know mine does not, nor does my friend's. Anyway, Yes, your DVD player will upconvert your recorded movies, but it won't look HD because although it boosts the resolution, it won't have the sharpness, clarity, and vibrance of a true HD signal.

known dvds play at 480i. An upconverting dvd participant can get it to 480p. It should not be hd content cloth nevertheless. the only hd disc is blu ray. you need to have a hdmi cable. It expenditures approximately $a hundred for the participant.
