Religion is a way of giving answers to those who can't or won't figure out their own answers, it provides paths to those with no paths of their own.
By creating the image/idea of a greater being it is to lessen the fears people have, by placing everyone inside a divine plan
Finally, for some people it is a way of defining their place in the world.
It is a search for answers, that cannot be found in laboratories.
But none of the established religions have the answers and so it is wrong to be complacent with what one religion teaches. One must look for themselves, beyond.

My religion, Islam, controls me from performing any type of a bad deed that affects your life in a negative way. Therefore, islam draws red lines all over my life just for your sake; For example, i am not allowed to kill anyone, to hurt anyone physically in a ny way (unless in war). I am not even allowed to drink, because then, i would be a potential hazard to you and everyone else. Why doesnt anything else control me, or has the authority as relign? Because every other authority in this life are Humans, just like me, so i need to obey something bigger. The only other thing i can think of is God.
This is just ONE of the purposes i can think of at this moment.
I hope this helps you!
(i understand that there other other muslims who unfortunatly miss understand islam, and dont take it as how its supposed to be taken)

There are 2 very simple answers:
1. (The pessimistic way) To keep people well behaved and in line, to control and manipulate them and their behavior, to conform to society.
2. (The positive way) Religion fulfills people's psychological need for group belonging, for a feeling of spirituality and a connection to a higher entity/or entities
I believe that both answers are true in some ways.
My religion: I believe in Judaism and I love G-d.

well- there's 2 answers. A belief structure and stories to explain the unexplainable are for just that reason- to explain the unexplainable. Organized religion however is a means of gaining control and power over the masses

Personally, I believe that religion is an initiation to spiritual growth. Unfortunately, some people get themselves so lost in the "infallible" doctrines and dogmas of religion that they never progress and never grow. They wind up putting all their faith in a 2000+ year old book instead of God.

Cool has nothing to relgion.
Religion has to do with finding a life path and may to live in a way that suites you.
Most people just dont understand that.
And to those saying "Control Cuz i think im the leet smartness!"
To bad your wrong.
If a relgion just wants to control then its not a relgion its a cult.
and if cult is to big of a word look it up here: http://www.google.com

To make the insecure feel secure!
For the hopeless to feel hope!
For the lonely to belong!
That is the foundations of all religions.
Shame most have forgotten!
