When you click a user to logon it says windows hasnt been activated, it signs in shows only the desktop without icons and says windows is now activated and restarts the computer i have found no way out of this loop.
PS. Safe mode doesnt seem to want to work as well.

Activate your windows xp before it's too late. When it expired, you cannot logon anymore. The only thing you can do is to reformat and install windows again and you will get another 30 days to activate windows. Activate it using your Genuine Product Key

Are you referring to Vista? If so, that's the way it's supposed to work. If you have a legal copy of Vista and tried to activate it and failed, contact Microsoft and they'll help you. Otherwise, your only option is to either purchase a legal copy or to format your hard drive and install another OS.
