It would be the same amount of work as painting. If you really want gloss (will show all defects) get the same color in a semigloss. You might consider a satin finish slight shine but not to much.

It is really suggested to use a paint with the gloss. There are some water-based polyurethanes that can be applied over paint
( the one I have seen is a matte finish), but most are meant to go over stains. I wouldn't go too high in sheen Hi-gloss tends to reflect alot of light and also shows imperfections in your walls. Normally I tend to suggest a satin finish which is just above a eggshell finish or semi-gloss. Also a small note, The higher the sheen the lighter a color will be. The lower the sheen the more truer to your color it will be.

I don't think gloss is a good idea. You will get too many shiny reflections on the walls. Plus it will show every imperfection in the drywall. If you don't like the flat, then maybe try the semi-gloss.
It's your house and you can do what you want, but just take a sec and think about it.

A High gloss polyurethane varnish could do the job.
It is as much work as painting with a high gloss paint though.

You have to repaint. Gloss is nasty outside the kitchen. Try semi-gloss.

I would go with repainting it with a semigloss.
If you put a clear coat of anything over it, it will most likely yellow and you risk getting a lot of bubbles, which is ugly.

If I were you, I would get the gloss paint and randomly paint it with a sea sponge.....very very pretty.

you need a special enamel paint which will be glossy , if you use ordinary paint you risk it getting tacky and chipping easy when you use the bath.
