What's going on, really? I'm a Christian, and I honestly have no problem with the theory of evolution. The Bible did not specifically say HOW the world was created, just that it was. So what is everyone offended about? Why is there all this fighting over the subject? No one is convincing anybody else, just saying hurtful things to each other. There are some things in the Bible that are to be taken metaphorically and not literally. Think about it: the Bible says the world was created in seven days. God said (in the bible of course), "Millions of years are like a day to me." We might be talking about 'God-days' here, and not the human concept of a day. So what is the problem? And the fact that we (humans) all evolved from a common ancestor? Of course! Eve! Didn't God create the animals first, then the humans? So why can't it be a possibility that He presided over evolution?

You confuse me a little bit, T-Rex. You say that the universe has "intelligence", like it's some sort of person. Therefore, you are admitting that there is something above us, because you make it out as though this "intelligent being" is running a chaotic universe. This gets me to the point of why I believe in God. If we could be destroyed at any moment, what is stopping it from happening? I can't possibly believe that chaos is running itself. We all would be dead already.

Oh, and Tard Attack, if you come back, can you be a little more specific?

Because many people believe that the Bible, from the beginning to the end, is a literal account of what happened, rather than parts of it being metaphoric.

Evolution clashes with the story of creation if people take it literally.

Oooh I like the responses on this question. To ad my 2 cents the bible have the creation part all wrong. Calling the universe's intelligence a God is like giving the wind a personality and worshiping it. Science is about learning how to manipulate the energies of the universe to make life more survivable. The universe has a great deal ramdomity to it but the bible believers don't factor in that reality. We can be destroyed at anytime by some asteroid and God will not give a rats whatever so worshiping a non existent personality is a waste of time.

When that asteroid is coming we better be ready no matter how much you believe in a God. Yet still the religious gets on sciences case all the time. You have good point in asking why the bible and evolution can co exist but the bible tell Christian to interfere with anything the question their its belief is the main reason they conflict.

I'm one of the Christians that believe that the evolution could be that way God create the world, Why not? The bible said that God spoke the word and the heavens was created but what if when He was speaking the word the Big Bam was happening because of the powerful Voice of the Lord? The thing is that most of the Christians have their mind capture in one theory and most of them thinks that is the only truth. That also happen when you see a lot of church in your neighborhood divide by names but still believe in the same God, I think it can also be about power they don't want to mix the "worldly" with the "spiritually". For all of this kind of topics Christians should be more open minds and realistic about it and unfortunately they aren't. But is truth most of them won't believe and is because of fear maybe to disappoint God because they think so that way. There just weak in spirit that's all.

Most Christians (including Catholics) do accept both the Bible and Evolution.

The Catholic Church does not take the stories of creation in the Bible literally. Catholics believe the book of Genesis tells religious truth and not necessarily historical fact.

One of the religious truths is that God created everything and declared all was good.

Catholics can believe in the theory of evolution. Or not. The Church does not require belief in evolution.

On August 12, 1950 Pope Pius XII said in his encyclical Humani generis:

The Teaching Authority of the Church does not forbid that, in conformity with the present state of human sciences and sacred theology, research and discussions, on the part of men experienced in both fields, take place with regard to the doctrine of evolution, in as far as it inquires into the origin of the human body as coming from pre-existent and living matter - for the Catholic faith obliges us to hold that souls are immediately created by God.

Here is the complete encyclical: http://www.vatican.va/holy_father/pius_xii/encyclicals/documents/hf_p-xii_enc_12081950_humani-generis_en.html

The Church supports science in the discovery of God's creation. At this time, the theory of evolution is the most logical scientific explanation. However tomorrow someone may come up with a better idea.

As long as we believe that God started the whole thing, both the Bible and modern science can live in harmony.

With love in Christ.

Evolution gives atheists a basis for explaining how life exists apart from Creator God. Evolution denies the need for God to be involved in the universe. Evolution is the “creation theory” of atheism.

They can, and they do. I took a course on Religion and Science, and of course, evolution was one of our main topics. We read article after article written by Christians who accepted evolution (we also read many where Christians didn't accept it). But the range of Christians who accept evolution is very diverse, and includes even Evangelical Christians. We had one book that was actually approved by the Vatican, and it contained mostly Catholic perspectives, and these accepted evolution to one degree or another. Another of our books was by Evangelical Protestants, and they all accepted it too. Another book was called, "Can A Darwinian be a Christian?" and the answer in this book was definitely yes.

Jewish people also have no problem accepting evolution.

Except that your bible doesn't say millions of years are like a day to me.. it says " a day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as a day."

HOWEVER, in Genesis, it specifies the length of time between the days.. "the evening and the morning were the first day".
Science has proven that the earth is slowing down, not speeding up in its rotation. Therefore, days were slightly shorter in ancient times.. so you can't marry the bible's creation story and evolution that way.
If you're willing to state that the bible's creation story is simply a myth created by man (btw, it's a conglomeration of ancient sumerian and babylonian creation myths) to explain how we got here.. then, of course you can accept both.

Because there are a lot of people in this country who haven't come out of the Middle Ages yet in terms of sociological acceptance.

They're still engrained in that stage of life where evolution and hard science has no role in their lives and goes against their own self-perceived doctrine of society.

I agree with you. I believe in G-d and I trully believe that G-d created the universe...but G-d is the source/fountain of intelligence and it is possible that evolution was His tool...afterall G-d works in mysterious ways I believe that humans cannot trully comprehend His ways.
:) Have a Great Day!
