i have seen from time to time that people who claim to be of the Catholic faith say it's the same as being a Christian. Do you believe this is true?

it is not true that catholicism is the same as christianity.
Catholic and Christian have many different in each other. First of all Christian based their faith solely in the bible (which the doctrine of Jesus Christ was written) but the catholic is basing their doctrine mostly on the tradition of man and in their catechism which formulated by their early catholic leaders. Christian does not believe in the following: trinity, original sin, purgatory, limbo, praying to saints, praying the rosary, the holy week, that Christ born on the 25th of December, and too many to list.

Catholicism is a Christian belief.

Central doctrines" of the Christian faith are those doctrines that make the Christian faith Christian and not something else.

The Christian faith is a definite system of beliefs with definite content (Jude 3). Certain Christian doctrines constitute the core of the faith.

Central doctrines include the Trinity (One God, three Persons), the deity of Christ as the second person of the Trinity, the bodily resurrection, the atoning work of Christ on the cross, and salvation by grace through faith. These doctrines so comprise the essence of the Christian faith that to remove any of them is to make the belief system non-Christian.

Scripture teaches that the beliefs mentioned above are of central importance (e.g., Matt. 28:19; John 8:24; 1 Cor. 15; Eph. 2:8-10).

Because these central doctrines define the character of Christianity, one cannot be saved and deny these.

Central doctrines should not be confused with peripheral issues, about which Christians may legitimately disagree. Peripheral (i.e. non-essential) doctrines include such issues as the timing of the tribulation, the method of baptism, or the structure of church government. For example, one can be wrong about the identity of "the spirits in prison" 1 Peter 3:19) or about the timing of the rapture and still go to heaven, but one cannot deny salvation by grace or the deity of Christ (John 8:24) and be saved.

All Christian denominations — whether Roman Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, or Protestant — agree on the essential core. The relatively minor disagreements between genuinely Christian denominations, then, cannot be used to argue that there is no objectively recognized core of fundamental doctrine which constitutes the Christian faith.

Catholicism is a denomination of Christianity. Some people claim that Catholicism is not Christianity because they have some different traditions, but, by definition, anyone who believes in Christ is a Christian.

Any group that prays to anyone or anything other than God The Father Can not be "True" Christians. Notice I said "any group"
Any Person who goes against what the Bible says can not be a "True" Christian i.e..Fortune telling, talking to or praying to the dead, good luck charms, statues or idols and so forth and so on.
One can be a member of the "First Church of Bowling" but that does not mean they know how to bowl"
Just as calling yourself a Christian does not make it so.
BY THE WAY A "TRUE" CHRISTIAN FOLLOWS ONLY THE HOLY BIBLE NOT TRADITIONS AND OTHER WRITINGS.

Yes, if they are truly practicing Catholics. Catholics make a profession of faith based upon Christian theology at confirmation. The church asks its followers to show faith by action. Just like other Christian denominations, "by their fruits you shall know them." Catholics have tremendous history and tradition behind them.

I feel Catholics can be Christians, but, a lot of their practices seem to encourage salvation through works and not through faith in Jesus Christ. If Catholics understand and accept salvation from Jesus why would anyone say they are not Christians.

No, catholics are the Pharisees of Christianity. They have added many rules to the religion that was not in the New Testament just as the Jewish Pharisees added to the original law that God gave to Moses and the Jews when the nation was established. Catholics call it the Sacred Tradition. The New Testament says nothing of birth control or of a single man who decides what the new rules are going to be, such as the pope.

Here's what I was told growing up:

If you're a Catholic, you're a Christian.
But if you're a Christian, it doesn't necessarily mean you're a Catholic.

Christianity has many different branches such as Protestant, Lutheran, Methodist, and Catholic.

Hope this helps!
