And by the way, 5 of the 9/11 terrorists were visa overstayers and at least one I know of had gotten a drivers license in one of the 'don't ask' states.

cora, no, to this day California looks at your birth certificate and govt ID the first time AND runs your ss# and waits to see the address which they compare w/ your license. I lost my license and wen't through it this year. Since these are partial compliance requirements of Real ID, and states have to comply BY 2008, it is hard to see how it could be a problem, to me.
