Is this a symptom of anything or is the nerve down there just flaring up? What can I take to relieve the pain? Like I said, there is no rhyme nor reason to when it hits. I'll feel a sharp shooting pain down there for a second or two, then it disappears. A couple minutes later, it does the same thing all over again. It started last night before I went to bed.

I am not a doctor only work for one, but my first guess would be to have your blood sugar checked. I would not say it is an emergency, but next time you need to go to the doctors just have it checked. And mention it to him. If you don't need to go in. Make a routine physical check.
