It depends on what you mean. Are you talking about love at first sight or are you talking about having a feeling of general like for this person. If it is the latter I believe it is karma. There are people out there that we just click with instantly and don't know why. It actually would fall under love at first sight also. I looked at this guy on time and I fell in love instantly. I knew I would marry him one day. I had never met him before and didn't know his name. Almost 20 years later and 3 kids we are still going strong. And it doesn't mean we are ignorant or shallow, it is how it is. And for the record the movie Shallow Hal has nothing to do with this question.

You observe their behavior. It doesn't have everything to do with looks. There are some people I have seen and wanted to get to know just by the things they say (do they refrain from cussing?, are they polite? do they seem honest and open? are they supportive? do they apologize? etc.). The way they carry themselves has a big influence on whether I like someone. If they dress conservatively with good hygiene, smile, don't smell awful, bring up topics I am interested in, and demonstrate values that are similar to mine, I'll probably like them. They have to show consideration for others. Looks do play a small role, but it's more about how their overall style is than the actual looks themselves.
