why are most wars started because of religion? What about the Christian religion? We have been killed because we are Christians but are we guilty when defending ourselves?

Donaldson-God Bless you. You share that sentiment along with my father who passed 4 years ago. He served in WW11, Korean, 2 tours in Vietnam.

This is an age old question and you must look further than "religion" to find the truth. Many leaders use religion as a rallying cry to "move the masses" to die for them. It is a tried and well-tested means to get the "common folk" to get angry and go kill and "defend" and steal oil and gold and riches from other countries. Read a history book. There is more to war than religion because as you point out, if we were truly Christians and Muslims and Buddhists and whatever peaceful religion that exists in this world, we wouldn't be doing this crazy **** to eachother. God bless you.

It is a perplexed Question...and a good one.
I was an operative in the Korean War, I don't know how many I killed...but was part of the covert thing.
I can remember just two I personally killed...today looking back it makes me sad to think about it.
I travel a lot and went back to the areas where I took life.
Ran across some relatives and tried to amend peace with them...I gave gifts and flowers to the families.
But all in all life is life no matter who we are.
Murder on the other hand is not sanctioned by law so it is different than war...I know it's hard to understand.
I am suffering even today when I dwell on this subject.
Thats why today I don't go to church or pray only when need be...I do believe in a Creator.
Peace....

Let us look at the wars today and see if they are religious or not.
Iraq... definitely not over their being "Muslim" and our being "Christian."
Persian Gulf... I think it was over the liberty of Kuwait... again, not religious.
Vietnam... is communism a religion? capitalism? Okay so were we there because they are Buddhists? So no again.
Korea... again... communism a religion?
World War II... though attrocities were carried out on a group of people designated by their religion, Hitler's motives were not religious but due to a seriously messed up idea of superiority of race... so he grouped a religious group based on ethnicity and not by doctrine (proof being that Christians with Jewish heredity were labeled Jews by the 3rd Reich)... So again... not a war over religion.
World War I... All the parties involved, with the exception of the Ottoman Empire, were Christian nations. But I think the death of Archduke Ferdinand and the alliances of empires was the cause and not religion.
I could go on.
Basically I just have to say that whoever said that wars were mostly started over religion is wrong. Most of the time war is over land, trade, honor, power, and not often because one group believes something different.
Even the crusades, though given a backing by the Church, were not about religion as much as European powers looking to take control of the Middle East and get control over the trade of spices and other valuables.

Wow
what mixed up values you have
It is not murder to kill in war
there is nothing wrong with defending your family, property, Country or yourself
Most war are NOT fought over religion, most have poilitical origins.
And no, you are not guilty of murder when defending things like listed above

Very sensitive question. Very difficult question. People always tell children, and anyone they can for that matter, to "fight for what you truly believe in". When it comes to faith and religion some cultures have taken that philosophy to heart for centuries. Generations who are born and bred with same mentality will always fight for their beliefs. I'm not saying that is wrong but it is extreme. I believe it is a sin to murder but I also believe in killing a few to prevent many more from being killed is for the greater good.

I think ALL is fair in love and war and therefore can't effectively answer your question. I also don't support organized religion, I feel it is an individual thing and don't understand why someone has to be in a 'posse" to be a good moral and decent human being.

Most wars are started because of financial or political disputes, or greed- someone on one side or the other figures they have something to gain. And how many people exactly did Jesus kill on His way to the cross, in self-defense?

If you ever see the South Park episode where Cartmen goes back in time for the Wii they give a great explanation that there would be war, no matter for what religon. You just cant stop it.

I think your premise is false. I don't know anyone who believes killing in war is murder. When you translate the Biblical texts back to the original tongues, "Thou shalt not kill" really becomes "Thou shalt not commit murder." There is a difference. I do not believe we are guilty of any sin if we kill while defending ourselves.

Most wars arent started due to religion. They use religion as a mask. Most wars are started for money, power, greed, control, ect. and no I dont think its murder when you're defending your country or beliefs.
