Beats me. I love my win 98. Never crashes or freezes (well, not since I quit using IE and switched to Firefox 4 years ago), nobody seems to bother sending out viruses for win 98 any more, and I tried 2000 and ME and they were both crap. We have XP at work and it is crap and I fully expect Vista is crap. I am sticking to 98.

if you do just surf a little on the internet, write once in a while an email, you're fine. Especially if you're using windows98 SE (Second Edition).
The problem is just, that Microsoft officiall dropped all Windows9x Operating Systems (95, 98, 98SE, ME) like a hot potatoe since mid-2006. (try to go to WINDOWS UPDATE with it, its the first page you'll see there). That means, IF (small chance though) there is a new issue with it, or somebody found a way to exploit windows9x - you're on your own! But unfortunately, windows98 is the most exploited and "abused"/infectable windows that existed so far.
On top of it, as already mentioned, nobody really programs FOR windows98 - that software still works for it, is merely a lucky compatibility thing. although it'll cause issues. I've seen it with newer Hewlett-Packard printer drivers. Windows98 was find after every reboot, but it gets sluggish over time and crashes because of the new drivers.
you do NOT have to loose all your stuff on your windows98 computer IF you decide to change/upgrade. Thats a urban-legend. A good Computer geek/tech can transfer ANY of your files and stuff.
But you sound like that your PC is already 8 years old, so, it'd be best for you, IF you decide to change, doing so with a whole new PC, instead of just buying a windowsXP package, as it requires faster/more modern PC hardware.
Its comparable with a car from the 1950's - it WILL drive you, but not as a car from the late-2000's could do it, safer, faster and more effectively.

You've never heard "Misery loves company"?
I'm on my old Pentium III with Win98 and Office 97 -- have no problem whatsoever. Got a great deal on a new PC with Office 2003 installed. A pain. Have to relearn how to do things because of changes in the program.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I was happy with Windows 98 until I moved to broadband and the software for modem just wouldn't work with it, believe me, I tried for a week to get it to work, and it wouldn't. So as I wanted the broadband more than I wanted Windows 98, I caved in and got Windows XP! Never had problems with that either!

You will find that as time progresses less and less programs will be compatible with Windows 98. For example, in two years time you might see a great piece of software, buy it, and find it only works with Windows XP and above.
Also, the newer operating systems have cool new tools and utilities bundled in.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. However, you will have to come out of the stone age eventually since 98 won't operate newer softwares.

Nobody needs Vista right now, but if you don't use new programs, then there is absolutely no need to upgrade.

I know people that still use Win98, it was one of the most stable windows relased. If you are fine with it and have no problems then don't listen to anyone. Why fix something thats not broken?
