It depends on the pipe material, 1/2" rigid or aluminum is bent with a 3/4" EMT bender. If you plan on doing a lot of bending get a good Ideal Bender.

1/2 inch i.d. steel pipe? You don't, you use fittings for direction changes. Bending plumbing pipe causes weakness in the structure. You do not want that. 1/2inch conduit or copper pipe can be bent with a pipe bender sold in hardware stores.

You need a pipe-bender... my husband does this...I think it involves a strong flexible insert and you put the whole caboodle into a stretching frame....does it all safely, with the metal safely protected inside and out
I think you get this from a proper builders' merchants' stores, and it's the kind of investment-gadget which creates man-bond friendships up and down the street, just the same as drain-rods, extending ladders, trailers for taking stuff to the dump, and wheel-hub pullers.

go to a workdhop and ask them to bend it for you. They normally have pipe benders that do the job.
