It is possible to work out and lose weight, but you might not gain mass if you are not taking in enough -protein-. Gaining mass is all about maintaining what is called a "positive nitrogen balance". That means you are taking in so much protein that your body can't get rid of it quick enough.....so you start gaining muscle mass. Recently there was a study done to see if working out or decreasing calories was best at losing weight or a combo of both. It was the largest study there is on the subject. Guess what they found??? It doesn't matter!!!! Both are equally good. But science has proven that there are also benefits to exercise. So please keep working out. But if you want to gain muscle mass, you need to eat plenty of protein and drink lots of water. Tuna fish and skinless chicken breasts are 2 good sources of non-fatty protein for you. Don't eat too much tuna because of the mercury in it though. You can also just get some cheap supplements on-line. Met-Rx is a good brand. So the key isn't necessarily calories, but protein. Please also remember that muscle weighs more than fat. So you can lose fat and gain muscle and gain 5 pounds. You will most-likely look better with 5 more pounds of muscle than fat though, so hit the weights!!!!!!

Muscle mass is heavier than fat, so if you want to build muscle without gaining weight, you will have to lose some fat. Chances are, you will not have to change your daily Calorie intake at all to allow you to lift weights and get results. Just make sure you're eating enough to fuel your exercise. If you find yourself getting more and more tired at the gym every week, that means you're not taking in enough Calories to fuel your exercise. But if you're really trying for big muscles, gaining some weight is inevitable.

YES - but - you will replace fat with muscle - and that's a good thing - BUT
muscle has weight, too
A good site I found was Burn the Fat Feed the Muscle
BFFM is written by a bodybuilder - and the goal is to reduce BMI or body mass index
you can just trim up - or go all the way to a competition body
best of luck

Sort of, you still have to do cardio, and muscle growth will be slower. But if you up your protein intake you should be able to do both.
However if you eat a lot of calories, including a ton of protein, and lift weights like crazy the muscles will grow faster, it's how bodybuilders work.

Of course, thats what I did, over the summer I didn't eat as much, and i ran and in time i lost 40 lbs, and have a 4-pack and a toned body. Now, I can eat more since my metabolism has sped up, and not gain a pound!
