Depending on the type of track (dirt or asphalt). You can have anything from a purpose built race car IE. late model or sprint car to a factory "stock" car that just has the glass removed and doors chained shut.

Late Models, Modifieds, Bomber's which are street cars(as opposed to a tube frame) There's a FWD class. Pro Stocks which are like modified's but have full fenders like a Late Model and usually run on gas as oppossed to alcohol.
The World of Outlaws.
Pretty much anything you can think of around here.

Up my way in eastern Canada the Sportsmen class run a $5000 motor claim on a weekly points racing basis. You want the winner's motor?-write a cheque and pull 'er out! There are just not the 8-cylinder rear wheel drive coupes out there anymore on the used market to run the old style "run what you brung" or "Dukes" style racing, so we have FWD four cylinder racing to start the festivities on a Saturday night. We've also got traveling circuits of pro stock and open wheel stocks when we are so blessed. All in all, I'd much rather be down at my local speedway than in front of my TV on a summer Saturday night!
