we do it because Jesus found those needing him this way, he taught his followers to do the same and as Christians we try to imitate the first century Christians as much as we can( before all the pagan beliefs were allowed in the churches) It isn't a requirement unless we want it to be but the bible says that faith without works is dead...door to door is a part of our works and therefore helps to keep our faith strong. As for those who we annoy... if there is one in 1000 people that we comfort or help by approaching them it is all worth it. by the way Thank you ...I'm sure from all witnesses for politely saying no and not being as rude as many people can be....God Bless

So, you are saying that if you were Jewish, some 1900 years ago, you would have told the Christan Jews that you already believed in God and didn't need to hear anything from them and you were already a member of the Blessed People of God.
You might check the Discovery Channel web site. About 40 years ago, Episcopalians did try but could not get their members to follow through, like many religions, even the Muslims. I have a brochure on their efforts that sites the success of the JW service, which not even Mormons can match.
The problem is not why the witnesses do, but why the Episcopalians don't, as it was one of the instructions of Christ, unless you think he was wrong about that, along with having the Memorial on the same day as the Passover, instead of the more convenient next weekend.
Also remember, faith without works is dead, according to the Bible.

Witnesses go from door to door because they try to imitate the first century Christians to a T.
First century Christians went door to door.
Acts 5:42 and Acts 20:20.
That's how the early Christians obeyed Christ's order of Matthew 28:19.
If it was good enough for them, its good enough for Witnesses today.
Their goal is not so much to convert as to share Mark 13:10.
It is not painful to give them 5 minutes.

Repeatedly through out the Bible we read of the need to share the Bible with others. Jesus even sent his disciples out to preach, and notice, he Also went preaching. We do not only go from door to door, being Christian and sharing our beliefs/way of life is a Life long thing, not just a 9-5 thing.
Thank you for being polite.

Why do Jehovah's Witnesses go door to door?
The reason the watchtower corporation orders their Jehovah's witnesses members to intrude door to door is because this cold-calling tactic gets them recognition and "persecution" as pesky.
If they can get "persecuted" then they can say they are 'persecuted for Jesus'.
What is their message?
The 'unique Gospel' of the Watchtower is that Jesus had his second coming 'invisibly' in the year 1914 and is working through them.
That's it: 1914 invisible Jesus is just like the emperor's invisible new clothes.

i am a jehovah witness, and we go door to door to preach our religion for those who want or need it. It bothers me when people say we havent been around for that long we have been around since moses. We are christians, and we do read the bible, we are just following the bibles words.

Jehovah's Witnesses go from door to door as Jesus commanded his followers to do so in Matthew 28:19,20. Going from door to door, or house to house was an early Christian method which was used to follow this command (Acts 20:20). It allows an opportunity for each individual to have a one-to-one discussion on the Bible. Please note though, that as with early christianity this is not the only method we use to preach. I also go out and talk to people in the streets and in their places of business, some friends of mine talk to people in parks, other friends, talk to workers at the docks. All we are doing is following Jesus' command to preach and teach.
Oh, and from one of the comments I note above, its not just the young. All in the congregation preach from door to door, from the young to the old, the oldest witness in my congregation is 90 and she still goes from door to door.

Matthew 28:19
"Go therefore and preach this good news to peoples of all nations ...baptizing them..."
If you really read your bible (without being rude certainly) then youd know that already and be doing this great community service that they have set as their goal trying to instill some bible knowledge in this immoral world

Really, everyone who respects and obeys Jesus Christ goes from door to door to teach his neighbors about the Bible's good news. It is interesting that only Jehovah's Witnesses are so clearly identified with the preaching work; globally more than 6 million preach publicly each month.
(Matthew 28:19,20) Go therefore and make disciples of people of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the holy spirit, teaching them to observe all the things I have commanded you.
(Acts 5:42) Every day in the temple and from house to house they continued without letup teaching and declaring the good news about the Christ, Jesus.
(Acts 20:20) I did not hold back ...from teaching you publicly and from house to house
It's sad when someone who claims to respect the bible actually insults or even advocates attacking a peaceful preacher. Sad but completely expected.
(2 Timothy 4:3-5) For there will be a period of time when they will not put up with the healthful teaching... You, though, keep your senses in all things, suffer evil, do the work of an evangelizer, fully accomplish your ministry.
Really, if someone goes out of their way to disregard Christian preachers and preaching, what is he saying about himself?
(Luke 10:1-17) After these things the Lord designated seventy others and sent them forth by twos... “He that listens to you listens to me too. And he that disregards you disregards me too. Moreover, he that disregards me disregards also him that sent me forth.”
